Although she declared to retire from politics and spend time with her grand children, there is no sign of such steps although the Awami League president, Sheikh Hasina, also a former prime minister, turns 61 today. Hasina, the eldest daughter of Bangladesh's first president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was born in her parental home at Tungipara in Gopalganj this day in 1947. She was elected president to the party in an Awami League council session in February 1981 and she returned to Bangladesh on May 17, 1981. Since then she has been the sole decisionmaker of the party, as Bangladesh virtually is under family dynasty of two Rahman families. In 1968, Hasina was married to nuclear scientist M Wazed Miah. They have a son and a daughter. The Awami League will organise a prayer session on the occasion, wishing her long life and good health, in Hasina's political office at Dhanmondi. Hasina now is in the United States for 'treatment' although according to many, it is a mere excuse for her to avoid legal actions in the country as Hasina faces series of corruption charges. The Awami League student wing, Bangladesh Chhatra League, will mark the occasions with a procession today. The procession will begin at noon from Madhu's Canteen at Dhaka University.
