Bangladeshi born British citizen and editor of Daily Amader Protidin, Anwar Shahjahan and members of his family were given life threat by criminal gangs during his recent trip to Bangladesh. According to a recent letter dated February 2, 2001, written by British Minister Jane Hutt AM to Bangladeshi Home Minister Advocate Shahara Khatun, Anwar Shahjahan "has been subjected to wholly unacceptable threats in Bangladesh with ransoms demanded causing fear and concern for himself and his family". Following such threat, a general diary was registered with Golapganj Model Police Station in Sylhet district on November 10, 2010 [GD Number 743]. The British minister requested for necessary police protection to Anwar Shahjahan. It is not know, if the Bangladeshi authorities paid any heed to this letter. Shahjahan is an esteemed member of the business community as well as active citizen in Barry, the largest town in Wales, United Kingdom. Minister Jane Hutt AM is the vice president of charity of Shahjahan Foundation [registered with the UK Charity Commission no. 1137676]. In a message to Weekly Blitz, Amader Protidin editor Anwar Shahjahan said that, during his stay in Bangladesh, unknown criminals called at his mobile phone and demanded TK. 1 million as ransom. They [the criminals] threatened to murder Anwar Shahjahan and members of his family, if they failed to pay the demanded amount. In recent years, criminal activities in Bangladesh have reached to an alarming level. At least a few dozens have been murdered by criminal gangs for failing to pay the amount of demanded ransom.
