Elderly US citizen murdered in Bangladesh

On early hours of March 25, 2011 [Friday], a US citizen named Momtaz Chowdhury [50], wife of Kamrul Hassan Chowdhury [Hashu] was brutally murdered at her residence at Shimulia, Gazaria under Munshiganj district in Bangladesh.

Momtaz Chowdhury has bee residing in United States for more than 3 decades with her family. Her 3 sons are also working in the US.

According to relatives of late Momtaz Chowdhury, armed robbers looted valuables and cash worth a few hundred thousand Takas and murdered the elderly woman, she was alone at home. Police are anticipating affiliation of any relatives or known person of her family with the robbery and murder. Investigation has already started and the dead body has already been sent for most-mortem autopsy.

For months, law and order situation in Bangladesh has greatly deteriorated both in urban and rural areas. Murder and robbery along with road-ride snatches have also reached an alarming level.

Commenting on the incident, a highly placed source in Bangladesh Police on condition of anonymity told Weekly Blitz that, in most cases, people with political connections are directly or indirectly involved with such crimes. The source said, in urban areas, law enforcing agencies are even obstructed in taking legal action against the culprits as they enjoy shelter from politicians and politically influential people.

The official said, authorities concerned in the spot of incident, where the elderly US citizen has been murdered, are already instructed to take immediate steps in locating and arresting the culprits. It hinted that, police has already got several clues, which may lead them in arresting at least some of the culprits by this evening.
