Inside his nicely decorated office and studio in a small lane in Dhaka city, Ashish Sengupta is busy in always experimenting various dimensions and moods of human faces. Since June 2004, Ashish is engaged in photography and already has captured thousands of celebrities, models, politicians, writers, poets, artistes etc. Name of Ashish Sengupta's studio is Eyeclick, which is located at: Kushtia Zilla Samity Building, 3rd Floor, 60 Purana Paltan Line, Shantinagar, Dhaka 1000, Bangladesh. He graduated from Government City College, Chittagong and had his schooling at Paharika High School, Kaptai, Rangamati, Bangladesh. Recently Ashish spent an entire evening with me, discussing his current and future projects, as well as limitations in photography in a country like Bangladesh, where most of the people still remain at below poverty level. Here is the excerpt: Q: How and why you decided to be a photographer? A: From childhood, I had dreams in me. I love to think and imagine. And of course, photography is one of the best methods of drawing my dreams in my own ways with various objects. It could be human being, animal or even any object. But, whichever is in front of my camera, I always try to give the touch of my imagination and creative ideas in it. Q: Being a front ranking professional photographer in Bangladesh, what are the obstacle for you, which in most cases, stop you from coming up with the pictures to meet the international standard? A: First of all is a technical limitation. We work under tremendous limitation. I know, my pictures would be much better if I could manage some top graded cameras and lighting equipment. I really work with day-to-day fear or risks of closure, as in most cases, we even suffer from lack of required fund to manage a studio that I own. Secondly, we are forced to complete a photo session of any individual in few hours, while in reality, such work needs more time. Wish I could get a full day to do that. But, problem again is the amount we are paid for our work. It is such meagre that, in most cases, it can hardly meet the segment of electricity bills and establishment cost. Accepting all such odds and adversities, we still work, as we love this profession and photography is already within my blood. Q: Have you ever sent your pictures to any international contest? A: I have plans of sending pictures to such events in near future. I will be grateful if organizers of such events will kindly notify me, when they invite photographs from the participants in the world. Q: Which of your own photography you still believe is the best and you are yet to click something better than that? A: I think, the best of my works, till today is my photographs of Bangladeshi film star Moushumi. I love those pictures, especially the one, where she covered her face. This is my best work till date. Q: Yes, I can sense the fragrance of your pure love for Moushumi. Without that, such brilliance is impossible. A: I fully agree. Q: Do you have any future plan of publishing an album of the best works of Ashish Sengupta? A: There are many plans in my mind, including this. But, as I said, limitations stop me from implementing them. Q: Thousands of your creative works have already found position in covers of Bangladeshi newspapers and magazines. Photographs of human and objects were also printed in calendars and various PR materials. Do you ever dream of seeing such works published beyond the border of Bangladesh? A: Of course! Every creative individual, dreams of seeing his work crossing the geographic boundaries. Actually, in my personal opinion, creative works should never be confined within the boundaries of any country or territory. Q: Please tell us something about your family life. A: I am happily married to Joyasree Lipi and we have a child named Rangan. Lipi is my love while Rangan is my life.
