It was a wholesome beating. Watching it, one longs for a universe in which arguments leave physical marks, bruises so there could be no doubt who won verbal clashes. That is the problem with arguments, you know – unlike bodily combats in which someone usually ends up dead, unconscious and/or bloodied – a clear winner and loser – in intellectual fisticuffs fools can still see a victor in the defeated. Veena Malik – a devastating beauty from Pakistan, famous for being on an Indian version of the show "Big Brother," is seen in a video circulating YouTube (link posted below) distributing a devastating, rhetorical earth-wiping of a sniveling cleric – the cleric is intent on labeling her as a disgrace to Islam, to Pakistan and to all women. The encounter begins with the cleric being transmitted in, just after Veena deftly parries charges that she is debasing the entire Pakistani culture. The hirsute cleric's name is Mufti Abdul Qavi. He begins his piece in eye-roll engendering cant: "Allah the Most Merciful and Compassionate" and so on. Then, oblivious to the contradiction, he castigates Veena in the most cruel and unloving ways: he declares, for instance, that "all" (as if he speaks for the entire country) Pakistanis are filled with "sadness" by her actions. The cleric then unbelievably claims that Veena owes her fame to Pakistan… Stop a moment. Watch the video – look at the harmony, luster, and symmetry of her face and you tell me who she owes her fame to. She is bone-breaking beautiful. At first, Veena attempts to be polite, and allow the fool to speak. In so doing, she unwittingly (or perhaps wittingly) allows the cleric to expose himself as a fundamentalist with a small mind, allows him to reveal himself to be a pedophile of inchoate, infantile thought as he accuses her of being a dissolute woman… dissolute for enjoying life. Veena eventually interrupts and roars over this ridiculous mouse, informing the cleric that she has taken care of her five sisters and one brother by herself, paid for all their educations – and that she is a resilient, upright (not on her back as they would make it seem) Muslim woman – yet, the media and the clerisy never report on all the good she does. Next, she directly tells the cleric that Islam is a vast religion – implying his bigoted, literal, ennui-inducing interpretation is otiose to her and should be meaningless to all like-minded women! Now, in case you miss the significance, she is, before your eyes, fighting for freedom of religion, fighting for freedom of religion within religion (which is often more important), and fighting for freedom of speech. We are seeing a Muslim woman, a Moderate Muslim (they are not a myth), stand up to bigotry in real time. (Norway – are you watching?) As he stumbles, from her blows, she tells him to clean up his own house – that there are thefts, bribes, murders and molestations of young boys in Islam. She thus states emphatically: "There are many things to talk about [in Islam and Pakistan]. Why Veena Malik?" Then, after more spot on jabs, Veena delivers her most masterful strike. It should be the motto of the new, Muslim woman: Veena screams at the cleric: "I am more angry with you than you are with me!" Knockout. This is the apt line, at the apt time – it is a blow that is debilitating to the entire infrastructure of the Muslim edifice. If the entire bloc of oppressed woman could feel this in the Islamic world - it would change things very quickly in a region stuck in amber. It could be a Lysistrata solution in the Muslim world, if you follow. Veena, after the knockout, hits him with a death blow, declaring that she has been – and I agree, and so will you – the consummate ambassador for Pakistan. She tells them, movingly, with tears in her eyes that the world must know that there exist Pakistanis who love fun, love life and love entertainment because much of the world only hears of Pakistanis as terrorists! In short, this video is the best thing you will watch this year. It is Shakespearian in its delivery. Its philosophy is J.S. Mill's On Liberty and The Subjection of Women personified. Its emotion is palpable. You will, I think, love the fact that Veena is not academic, but brilliant; love that she is voluptuous and brilliant; and love that Veena metaphorically owns the soul of a dastardly, desiccated cleric as he attempts to literally own her soul first. It just does not get better than this for those who care about the oppressed. Please share with all you know.
