Thousands of fake profiles on Facebook identified

Following publication of the previous report in Weekly Blitz on June 24, 2011, our news desk is continuing to investigate various fake accounts as well as accounts containing pornographic or sexually explicit materials. We are publishing the second installment of the report with the hope that Facebook authorities in Bangladesh as well as various law enforcing agencies, especially Rapid Action Battalion will take necessary measures against the owners of such fake accounts. It is important to mention here that, though people think their identity can be suppressed if they use pseudonyms or illegally use photographs of other people in the fake profiles, Facebook authorities or law enforcing agencies can easily track the original owner of such fake accounts by taking the IP address of the person, who created the fake account.

Innocent people are also becoming victim of various fake accounts on Facebook and in most cases, photographs of females are either stolen from their original account on Facebook or some other places, and later used the same picture in fake accounts, terming them as prostitutes, hooker etc. In most cases, people concerned are even un-ware of such illegal usage of their photographs.

Some of the fake accounts on Facebook, especially using female names are created by criminal gangs or individuals with ulterior motive as well as to blackmail any specific person or individual as well as malign the social image of the person concerned.

Some of the criminals are even creating fake PAGE and GROUP on Facebook with ulterior motive. Few weeks back, a criminal in the Middle East created a fake PAGE using the name of the editor of Weekly Blitz. When the matter came into the knowledge of Blitz authorities, Facebook had already been notified about existence of such fake PAGE. Creator of this fake PAGE later started demanding money from Weekly Blitz in exchange of removing the page. International law enforcing authorities are already informed about this specific Cyber Crime, which was committed by a woman, who lives in the Middle East. It is also assumed that, this woman might have connection with international criminal gangs or with Islamist militancy outfits, as Blitz is the only anti-Jihadist newspaper in the Muslim world.

Weekly Blitz also identified a very offensive PAGE against Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

Here is a list of some fake profiles on Facebook, which are containing objectionable contents and sexually explicit [porn] materials and photographs. It may be mentioned here that, all the friends in the following Facebook profiles are either fake or contain sexually explicit materials:

It may be mentioned here that, uploading pornographic materials on Facebook account is not permitted. But, all of the fake accounts especially with objectionable sexually explicit titles are continuing to upload hundreds of porn pictures and videos, which has already become a matter of great embarrassment for many of the Facebook users. In some cases, people are tagged into such porn photographs or videos without consent. Facebook authorities though continuously hunts such accounts, photographs and videos and removes them immediately, growth rate is much higher now than deletion.
