The Sungnyong Shrine in Pyongyang is one of the historic relics dating back to the period of Ri Dynasty [1392-1910]. It was built in 1429. Memorial services for Tangun, founder of Ancient Korea [early 30th century B.C.-108 B.C.], and Tongmyong, founder of Koguryo [277 B.C.-668 A.D.], took place in the shrine. It had been called Tangun Temple or Tangun Shrine until the 17th century. The building is 12.88 meters long and 9.17 meters wide. Its foundation is 1.15 meters high. Portraits of Tangun and Tongmyong are hung side by side on the wall of the shrine and an altar and an incense burner are placed below them. The Sungnyong Shrine is well preserved as a historic remnant which shows fine architecture of the Korean people in the middle age.
