Study Results of Koguryo Group Tombs Discovered in Pyongyang

The study group of the Department of History of Kim Il Sung University and the Korean Central History Museum studied group tombs belonging to the period of Koguryo. They were discovered in the area of Taesong-dong, Taesong District, Pyongyang several years ago.

More than 30 tombs of different structure retained the clear traces of mural paintings.

Discovered relics included precious metal craftwork including gold earrings, iron products such as nails and chains as well as pieces of earthenware, bricks, tiles and bones.

Part of color mural paintings was found in a single-chamber earth-covered stone tomb.

The paintings show the excellent contents of Koguryo mural paintings, which was recorded as a world heritage, as well as the high skill of painting.

The gold earrings, rare in shape and structure, showed well the high level of gold craftsmanship in the period of Koguryo.

New archaeological information about the history and culture of Koguryo was also made known, those about the cultural development in Pyongyang, in particular.

The study group also found out material which can scientifically prove that Koguryo culture centering on Pyongyang gave great influence to the cultural development of Paekje, Silla and Kaya.

All the historical relics discovered from the group tombs are significant in clarifying the position of Pyongyang in the country's cultural development and in proving that Koguryo, a strong country that existed for a thousand years in Korea's history, was the hub of historical and cultural development in the period of the three kingdoms. The group tombs are drawing attention of the academic circle for their value.
