In Pyongyang there is the Tumor Research Institute of the Academy of Medical Science. Founded in February 1966, the establishment is devoted to scientific research, treatment and prevention of cancerous diseases. Researchers of the institute have contributed to the promotion of health by solving lots of scientific and technical problems arising in preventing, diagnosing and treating cancers in their early stages through intensified researches. Early in this century alone, they invented and employed the method of restoring the vocal sound after operation on cancer of the larynx, the process of grafting haematogenic stem cell, and the like. Such achievements are inconceivable apart from the researchers' strenuous studies and toils. Members of the cancer vaccine research section headed by Ri Il Hun afford an apt example. They were committed to the invention of a vaccine for preventing the relapse and metastasis of cancer occurring frequently in post-operative patients. It was no easy job inventing the vaccine to function as an activator of the cells, interleukins and interferons of the body's immunological system so as to get rid of cancer transfer points spread in the body. Although they failed scores of times, they never gave up. They intensified their studies, going through the latest literature on medicine and holding consultations frequently. Their tireless endeavours bore fruit. They invented the vaccine, which they introduced in clinical practice. It raised the survival rate of those who were given the vaccine treatment after operations much higher than that of those treated otherwise. Later it was scientifically proved that the vaccine was very efficacious in preventing and treating cancerous melanomas and nephric cancer that had shown weak or almost no reaction to anticancer medicines or radiotherapy. Ri Yong Il, a resident of Central District in the capital city who was treated with the vaccine, says, "In September 2003, one month after undergoing an operation on hepatoma, I was treated with the vaccine. At the time I doubted that the vaccine would prevent the transfer of the cancer. Years passed, and I came to believe in the vaccine. And the fact that people who received the vaccine therapy are now working in good health has made me more convinced of its efficacy." O Song Chol, a resident of Mangyongdae District in the capital city, says, "I was diagnosed as a case of hepatoma eight years ago. At that time I was so weak that I found it difficult even to go outdoors. After undergoing an operation, I was treated with the vaccine and went through a rest cure for some time. Now I go to work in good health. The vaccine is a wonder drug." Today the researchers of the institute have set themselves a higher goal of research and are working hard to attain it.
