On July 30, 1946, the Law on Sex Equality was promulgated in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. With this event the Korean women, who had been subjected to feudal subordination, maltreatment and insult for ages, began to take active part in social activities on an equal footing with men. They are now wonderfully doing their bit in all fields—education, public health, sports, culture, etc. Among them are teachers and researchers of Kim Il Sung University. First woman doctor of geology: Dr. Pak Hye Suk, the chair of petrology of the geological faculty, is the first woman doctor in the field of geology. People call her "passionate scientist" and "fiery enthusiast." After graduating from primary and secondary schools with honour, Pak matriculated in Kim Il Sung University and studied hard. After graduation summa cum laude, she went through the postgraduate course of the university and became its teacher. Pak has since devoted her all to the education work and scientific research. To make a systematic analysis of the distribution of minerals and their forming conditions according to their properties and characteristics in Korea, she visited dozens of mines and went deep into the pit. Such an enthusiasm led her to the success in her research, and she was awarded the Doctor's degree. She also opened up a broad vista for renovation in the development of light industry by developing a new natural pigment from domestic raw materials. Based on her findings in the practice, Pak has written a number of textbooks and reference books to suit the realities of the country. Energetic doer: Dr. Kim Ryon Hwa, microbiological researcher of the life science faculty, is an acknowledged doer. Once she starts a research project, she will go on with it to the end. This kind of temperament has made her an authority in the microbiological field. One year, while talking with a woman official in the poultry field, she came to know that the bird flu had begun to do a colossal damage to poultry farming worldwide. It was, therefore, a pressing issue in the field. Kim decided to tackle the problem herself. She set to on the research task, but there were so many difficulties in the way, and her work made little progress. Now she frequently visited relevant organs and enterprises to have discussions with workers and technicians there, which gave clues to the solutions of knotty problems one after another. At last she succeeded in establishing a way to prevent respiratory diseases and digestive troubles common to all domestic animals and fowls and fish in a short time of only one year. This earned her a respectful "title" of "energetic doer." Teacher with aim high: Dr. Ju Hyon Hui teaches analytics in the mathematics faculty. She is rather tall for a woman and is usually taken for a sportswoman at a first glance. But she is a scientist and teacher of a serious and calm character. She is always bent on how to develop her students into mathematics genius. She often says her wish is to stand in the van of not only the education of future generations as an educator, but also the scientific research. All the students under her charge are honour students and have won the Student's Science Pursuit Prize. This is a good proof of how her ideal comes into reality. As an educator, she has never stopped supplementing teaching programs as required by the developing era. Meanwhile, she has been enthusiastic about research work. One of her theses caused a great sensation in the academic world at home and abroad. Related Topics: Special Supplement receive the latest by email: subscribe to weekly blitz's free mailing list |
