The Songun idea, along with the Juche idea, serves as the great revolutionary ideology of the times in the country. Leader Kim Jong Il formulated the idea and line of attaching importance to arms, the military affairs, which President Kim Il Sung had established for the first time in history and held fast to in the whole course of leading the revolution and construction, and systematized them as the guidelines for the times and revolutionary development. He grew up in the thick of the anti-Japanese war and acquired the qualities of the successor to the Songun revolutionary cause under the influence of his parents. When he took his son in his arms for the first time Kim Il Sung told the anti-Japanese war heroine Kim Jong Suk to bring up children well to make them carry forward the revolution and it was his intention to get them to hold on the red flag of the revolution held up high in Mt. Paektu generation after generation. When he proclaimed the birth of the regular armed forces in the liberated country he told his son that those who truly care for the country and people should give priority to the military affairs and hold fast to them, implanting the importance of it into his mind. The revolutionary influence of his parents and his natural endowments constituted the basis which enabled him to fully grasp the President's Songun idea and inherit it. It is his invariable faith and indomitable will to defend, carry forward and accomplish the cause of the Korean revolution, which the President started and advanced by dint of arms, with arms. During the Korean war young Kim Jong Il received a pistol from his father. At the time he realized the profound truth of the arms-based revolution and made it his maxim of life and struggle in the course of revolutionary practice. While studying at Kim Il Sung University he made in-depth study of the President's military ideas and elucidated them scientifically. He generalized and systematized the Juche-oriented military ideas and theories of the President and enriched them in his works including On the Special Features and Aggressive Nature of Modern Imperialism, Let Us Learn Military Affairs in Earnest and On the Juche-oriented Military Ideas and Theories of the Great Leader. With scientific analysis and extraordinary insight he clarified that the President's idea and line of attaching importance to arms are an original idea of arms-based revolution that broke fresh ground in the development of revolutionary ideology, not a simple idea of building armed forces. In particular, he took revolutionary steps to formulate and systematize the idea of attaching importance to arms in the light of its importance in the mid-1990s when the world was seeing political upheavals and when the DPRK was at the crossroads of survival and death. He realized the urgent requirements of the Songun revolution and the circumstances at a time when a key role of arms was clearly being manifested in the defence of the country and the overall socialist construction and when the vitality of the idea and line of giving priority to the military affairs was being given the fullest play and named the President's idea of attaching importance to arms the Songun idea, formulating and systematizing it in an all-round way. The Songun idea is a great revolutionary idea which is fully furnished with the system and contents as a powerful instrument in revolutionary practice.
