Songun politics, unique mode of politics

The Workers' Party of Korea pursues Songun politics, the first of its kind in history, that leader
Kim Jong Il has applied to socialist politics by carrying forward President Kim Il Sung's idea and line of giving priority to arms and the military affairs.

Different political modes have been adopted since the beginning of politics in history of humankind. Politics is a key factor that decides the existence and development of state.

After establishing socialism some countries failed to adopt a correct political mode that suits the intrinsic characters of carrying out the cause of socialism. They swung from right to left in the socialist construction without having any definite ideas and policies and finally collapsed.

It shows that the adoption of a political mode that suits the essential features of the socialist cause is not a simple matter of theory, but a matter vital to the success of the socialist cause.

Kim Jong Il accomplished the historic cause of establishing the mode of Songun politics, a political mode of Korean style, that meets the specific conditions of the country which is building socialism in the face of challenges of the imperialists.

He said:

"Our Party's Songun-based revolutionary leadership, Songun politics, is a mode of the revolutionary leadership and a mode of socialist politics that puts forward the military affairs as the foremost state affair, defends the country, the revolution and socialism and pushes the socialist construction dynamically as a whole by relying on the revolutionary spirit and fighting efficiency of the People's Army."

The WPK's Songun politics is a mode of politics that puts the military affairs above anything else.

Regarding the military affairs as the most important means giving top priority to them in the struggle for the development of the country.

Independent development of a country is a prerequisite for the overall development of society

In the present-day world in which the military power is vital to the development and destiny of a nation the military affairs are not merely confined to developing features of state. If a country is weak militarily, it can neither defend its sovereignty nor develop the national economy and culture independently in the way it wants.

Under the circumstances the WPK has established Songun politics, a unique mode of considering the military affairs as the most important affair by inheriting and developing President Kim Il Sung's idea and line of attaching importance to arms and the military affairs.

In the DPRK the military is the top state affair. Lines and policies of the Party and state are worked out and carried out from a viewpoint of attaching importance to the military and the habit prevails in society.

The WPK's Songun politics is a political mode that defends the country, the revolution and socialism and pushes the socialist construction as a whole with the People's Army as the core and the mainstay.

Socialist countries had pursued politics that regarded the working class as the main agent.

The reality, however, shows that only when the revolutionary army that is more revolutionary and militant than the working class becomes the main force can the cause of socialism that is going on despite the face-off with the imperialists be successful.

So the DPRK administers politics of defending the country, the revolution and socialism with the People's Army as the mainstay of the revolution and solves all the problems arising in the socialist construction by relying on it.

One day in 1974, when Kim Jong Il told the high-ranking officers of the People's Army about the importance of the Party's policy of grand socialist construction he said that he was going to assign crucial construction projects to the People's Army and the army should play a leading role both in military duty and socialist construction.

The KPA soldiers are taking the lead in the socialist construction as the mainstay of the Songun revolution and the creator of the people's happiness, upholding the slogan "Let us undertake both the national defence and socialist construction!".

Songun politics is positively accepted by the world's progressives for its validity and vitality.

Songun politics will remain the WPK's political mode.
