Kim Jong Il, general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission, gave on-the-spot guidance to different sectors. He inspected Kim Jong Hwan-managed Fish Farm. The fish farm covering an area of dozens of hectares and in which an average of 400 litres of spring water gushes out per second is increasing catch by relying on its solid foundation for producing cold and hot freshwater fishes including rainbow trout, carp and grass fish. In particular, it built several gravity-fed fish ponds to activate fish raising and boldly introduced catfish and sturgeon farming which was regarded as impossible in the area, thereby exceeding the level of peak year in this year's fish production. He looked round gravity-fed ponds, fry and mother fish ponds, hatchery and other places to learn about fish farming. He was pleased that the farm has produced good fish breeds and supplied them to other fish farms by establishing a fish breeding system on the basis of advanced technologies, saying that the farm is just the one that is capable of bringing substantial benefit to the people. Noting that the country has favourable conditions for doing fish farming on a large scale, he stressed the need to raise fish on a mass scale. He visited Om Tok Song-managed Fish Farm under Korean People's Army Unit 580. Established in September 1999, the farm specializes in the production of cold freshwater fish like rainbow trout. After being briefed on the fish farm in front of a chart showing its management and operation activities he looked round fish ponds to acquaint himself with fish production. Seeing red carp and rainbow trout as big as forearm, he learnt about this year's fish output, the destination of products and the response of the service personnel and people to them. He asked about the volume and temperature of source water flowing into fish ponds, feed and additives and got familiar with the cultivation of Rana omativentris the farm has started recently. He spoke highly of the efforts of the employees repeatedly, saying that thanks to their devoted efforts the secluded, out-of-the-way place where only the twitter of mountain birds was heard more than a decade ago has turned into a good fish producer. He provided on-the-spot guidance to the General Food Processing Factory under KPA Unit 534. The factory with a total floor space of over 37 000 square metres is a comprehensive food processor that not only produces various condiments and foodstuffs including soy sauce and soybean paste but also processes grain. It turns out instant rice, powdered soy sauce, soybean paste and different pickled vegetables such as radish, cucumber, red pepper and garlic. He was very pleased when he was told that the workers at the factory have overfulfilled production targets for this year. He dropped in the room for education in the revolutionary activities and the room dedicated to the history of the factory. He then made the rounds of the condiment and instant rice workshops and other places. He was delighted to see that the technicians and workers who are fully conscious that the key to putting production on normal track is to make the production and management activities scientific and IT-based solved technological problems and carried out the assembly of sophisticated equipment in a very short time to start production. He praised the employees for having planted many trees and keeping the workplace clean. Noting that the factory is important in enriching the diet of service personnel and people, he stressed that bigger efforts should be made to put production on normal track. He had a photograph taken with the officials. During his inspection tours he was accompanied by Kim Jong Un, vice-chairman of the WPK Central Military Commission, KPA Vice Marshal Ri Yong Ho, member of the Presidium of the Political Bureau of the WPK Central Committee and chief of the KPA General Staff, Kim Kyong Hui, member of the Political Bureau and department director of the WPK Central Committee, and other senior Party and military officials.
