History of Bangladesh war needs to get on right track

History loses its importance when it is fabricated or exaggerated. One the other hand, it gets international acceptance and recognition when it is authentically done. Unfortunately the history of the liberation of Bangladesh, after 40 years of independence, is now presumed as fabricated. In a Goebbels's way, we established that 3 million people have been murdered during the War of Independence in 1971. It is quiet untrue and unrealistic! We lost lives between 3 to 5 hundred thousands. This figure is no joke at all! Actually the figure is still unknown to any. Yes, there had been freedom fighters, Hindus and Bihari's amongst the people who had been killed during this war.

The collaborators, Biharis and Razakars used to torture and murder the Bangladeshis. They torched houses of the Hindus and freedom fighters to ashes, while similar thing happened with the Bihari properties too. A large number of females as well as girls and infants were brutally raped by various elements. But after liberation, the retaliation was high enough. Some of the noted freedom fighters killed many Biharis after the declaration of the victory and surrender of the Pakistani forces. These freedom fighters were engaged in looting and massacre, which was violation of Geneva Convention. It is not difficult to discern the happening in 1971 as many people are still alive who took part of that war. There are witnesses who saw the Bihari killing by Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury (Maya) or Gazi Golam Dostogir (owner of the Gazi water tank industries and well as Gazi TV). Kader Siddique, the veteran freedom fighter is also a 'veteran' of Bihari and Rezakar killing. There are evidences, locally and internationally, against him as well as many others of their post-war brutalities and violation of the Geneva Convention.

Large number of people managed certificates as freedom fighters falsely, though they actually were vehemently opposing the war of independence of this country. At the same time, a large proportion of the freedom fighters either did not get the certificate or never took any such certificate. The state machinery has never recognized many of such heroic freedom fighters.

Definitely we want trial against the collaborators and demand rigorous punishment of their crime. But it does not mean that we have to forget the heinous crimes and sins committed by the pro-liberation forces as well. If we willingly oversee - or if we suppress facts and intentionally ignore the realities, the history would be betrayed by us!

Editor's note: In 2001, I got a document in hand where a man claiming to be the son of a martyred freedom fighter managed a job in the police service and was already a police sergeant with the traffic department. Surprisingly enough, in the birth certificate, the man was shown to have been born in 1975. When he was summoned by me to clarify as to how he was born in 1975, being the son of a martyred freedom fighter, when his father died before December 16, 1971, the man without hesitation said, "our entire family supports Awami League". It was clear that through this claim of political affiliation, he wanted to justify the falsification of the claim of being the child of a martyred freedom fighter. This particular incident left a room for everyone to think, if the birth certificates of all those people, who managed government service being children martyred freedom fighters, and all those people, traced as false claimers should be immediately ousted from the service and brought under the law.
