Beginning of a New Era
by Sohail Choudhury http://www.weeklyblitz.net/331/beginning-of-a-new-era
November 19 2009 will remain as one of the most important episodes in Bangladesh's history. This is the day when Appellate Division will give its verdict about the fate of the killers of the Great Leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. In 1975, on 15th of August, the founder of Bangladesh, Great Leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated along with all the members of his family and many others that were present on that day at the residence of the Great Leader. Present Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana survived the tragedy as both of them were out of the country. From 1975 to 2009, quite a long journey. 34 long years have passed. In these years, sometimes it was believed that trial of this tragic death will begin soon. Sometimes it seemed the killers will be punished. Sometimes it was also felt that it is a gone case. Never will those people, responsible for this tragic event be punished. After Mujibur, many patriotic Bangladeshi ruled the country. But, none of them felt the need of trying those involved in the killing of the Great Leader. For obvious reasons many of the common people thought, one day this murder issue will ultimately be forgotten. Some say that one ANDHA HAFEEZ, a so-called saint based in Chittagong, who is basically a non-Bangladeshi citizen, had given GREEN SIGNAL to the ones carrying out the massacre. Many people had special adherence to this "Mr. Saint" as a great fortune teller and spiritual personality. Because of people like ANDHA HAFEEZ and people alike, there was a conception in the minds of ordinary people that the assassins were nothing but divine soldiers and killing of the Great Leader was-------? During post Mujibur era, the government who were in power didn't seem to have any interest in doing anything to bring the murderers to justice. Although, there was public demand; but no steps had been taken by people in power. In 1996, Great Leader's daughter became Prime Minister of the country. During her five years term as Prime Minister, she could not complete her task. Then another 7 years passed. Now, it seems that this un-resolved matter will ultimately be resolved. Although killing of someone or a group of people by hanging them until death is definitely not something any civilized person will enjoy, but this is the rule. That's how capital punishment is carried out in many countries; also in Bangladesh. After the verdict from the Supreme Court, the victims can appeal to the President of the country seeking PRESIDENT'S MERCY if the appellate division upholds the order of the High Court. In any case, that day is not too far when most of the people involved in the murder of the Great Leader [as some of them are abroad] will have to say GOOD BYE to this world. As many believe, through executing the murderers of the Great Leader the nation will free itself from disgrace. Hope Bangladesh enters into a NEW ERA freeing herself from a state of disgrace.
