Recently Paltan Police Station in Dhaka has submitted charge-sheet [charge sheet number 333] after investigation of several months against the prime accused Ruhul Amin, who led a gang of thugs in attacking Weekly Blitz office. Trial into the case lodged by Weekly Blitz shall begin soon. The attack took place on February 22, 2009 in broad day light, where the attackers looted valuables from the Blitz office and physically assaulted its editor and other members. Police however 'failed' to trace other culprits named Shamim [a man claiming to be from Directorate General of Forces Intelligence], Shintu, Liton Yunus etc. Yunus is the cousin brother of Ruhul Amin. All of the perpetrators, who attacked the Weekly Blitz office, are closely associated with main accused Ruhul Amin. It is alleged that, police did not interrogate Ruhul Amin in tracing the other accused. It is even alleged that influential Awami League leader Amir Hossain Amu was continuing to exert influence on Paltal Police Station in not submitting charge-sheet on this case. Sources further confirmed that, prior to this attack on Weekly Blitz office; Amir Hossain Amu personally called the senior officers at Paltan Police Station and asked them to refrain from taking any legal action, when Awami League thugs would attack the Weekly Blitz office on February 22, 2009. Ruhul Amin is a known smuggler and terror kingpin in Bangladesh who has created a huge terror base in Dhaka and is controlling city's Bangabazar market for decades. He is behind various forms of criminal activities including murder, abduction, and rape and setting fire on Bangabazar market. Commenting on the charge sheet, Advocate Arif told Weekly Blitz that, police could easily arrest other accused in the case, if they were able to perform their duties ignoring undue political influence. But, he said, it was impossible for police to ignore influence of influential Awami League leader like Amir Hossain Amu.
