Weekly Blitz is continuing to receive several informative mails from individuals in India who are raising fingers at the telecom deal in private sector in Bangladesh between Warid Telecom [a company based in United Arab Emirates and run mostly by Pakistani officers in Bangladesh] and Bharti Airtel Group. According to Indian and Bangladeshi press, Bharti Airtel Group was promoted by Sunil Bharti Mittal.

Sunil Mittal's Bharti Group is also engaged in various ventures in agro processing sector in India and one of their ventures is an association with Del Monte Pacific, Singapore. This company has been involved in degrading the environment and a complaint from the village of Batavarapalli, in the state of Tamil Nadu [India], near Bangalore, where their food processing factory is located, is at an advanced stage of disposal by the tribunal/authority in Chennai, set up under our Supreme Court directives. The complaint is under the national Environment Protection Act. Over and above this judgment, which is definitely not expected to be in favor of the pollutant.

Another complaint has also been made out for violation of Indian foreign exchange laws in regard to this factory with the Directorate of Enforcement, Ministry of Finance, Government of India. Officials from the directorate have visited the village on December 14, 2009 for preliminary investigations

An attempt was earlier made by the Bharti Group to stake out a similar telecom company in South Africa, MTN, in Sept 2009. Several letters were written to the regulatory authority, shareholders and the telecom union in RSA about this matter. Ultimately, negotiations were cancelled.

It is questioned by many that, any attempt by Bharti Telecom Group to enter Bangladeshi telecommunication sector should be properly investigated and scrutinized. It is claimed that, Bharti Telecom and Del Monte syndicate will cause serious environmental pollution and damage public domain on the internet if they are allowed to enter Bangladeshi telecom sector.

Bharti Group made false investment promises in West Bengal in India. According to Indian government sources, this group committed to invest US$ 11 million for a food processing unit in 2003. Since 7 years have passed, Bharti Group is yet to implement such investment pledges.
