Medical workers at the Pyongyang LIONS Ophthalmic Hospital have made great efforts to restore sight of the blind. The hospital donated by the International LIONS Society was opened to the public five years ago. Its doctors cured many patients of intractable eye diseases including cataract and glaucoma and restored their sight with high medical skills and warm humanity. Some days ago a patient with a badly injured face was carried to the hospital. "Name: Sin Jong Min, age: 22, occupation: farmer in Yonan County, South Hwanghae Province, and diagnosis: opacity of vitreous body and detached retina caused by an eye injury. Complete loss of eyesight was the final conclusion of the doctors. At that time people thought that there was no hope of his recovery. However, a miracle happened. The high medical skills and devotion of the medical workers made him see again. On the day when the patient was unbandaged he exclaimed, "I can see. I can see." The medical workers hugged him in joyful tears. There are many people who restored their sights in the hospital. The medical workers also traveled across the country to give medical treatment. In October Juche 98 (2009) a 97-year-old woman in Chongjin City received on-the-spot treatment from them and recovered her sight. Before Korea's liberation (August 15, 1945) she lived in destitution and became gradually blind due to the aging-induced engorgement. When she saw her grandchildren after receiving medical treatment, she could not hold back tears in great joy. Scientific research for putting treatment on a high level is also carried on in the hospital. Several treatises conducive to the development of ophthalmic science and treatment were highly appreciated in the national exhibition of scientific and technological achievements in public health. They included "Vitreous body—operation on retinae" by Ryu Un Hui, director of the hospital, and "Study on enhancing the effects of an operation for excising vitreous body by the use of corneal contact prism lens" by doctor Kim Kyong Ae. Scores of medical appliances including "broad-field angle lens for operation on the retina of vitreous body" and "functional tester of binocular vision" were invented to improve the quality of examination, treatment and operation. The hospital is making uninterrupted successes in treatment. The director of the hospital confidently said that they would make innovations in treatment, true to the healthcare policy of the State which is entirely responsible for the people's lives and health, this year.
