U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director Denise Rollins and Bangladesh Health Advisor to the Prime Minister Professor Dr. Syed Modasser Ali jointly inaugurated two new U.S. Government funded health projects today. The US$13.5 million "MaMoni" project will improve maternal and newborn health to the more than 3.5 million people living in the Sylhet and Habiganj districts. The US$13 million "Modhumita" project will provide HIV prevention services to high risk groups, including injecting drug users, transgender sex workers and their clients, and HIV positive people across Bangladesh. The U.S. Government, through USAID, is working to improve the lives of the people of Bangladesh, especially the very poor. USAID administers programs in Bangladesh in five broad areas: improving health and pre-primary education, creating income opportunities for rural poor, supporting good governance, enhancing food security, and strengthening disaster preparedness and providing emergency assistance following natural disasters. The U.S. Government has provided more than US$5.5 billion in assistance to Bangladesh since 1971. In 2010, U.S. assistance will total about US$163 million.
