The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) was founded on September 9, 1948, some six decades ago. The founding of the DPRK was an event of historic significance as it ushered in a road of building a socialist state of unique style centred on the masses of the people in Korea. Since its founding, the Korean people have eliminated centuries-old backwardness and penury and built a powerful socialist state independent, self-sufficient and self-reliant in defence. Politico-ideological and military power The DPRK has consistently adhered to the principles of maintaining Juche in ideology, independence in politics, self-sufficiency in the economy and self-reliance in national defence. Guided only by the Juche idea authored by President Kim Il Sung and formulated by leader Kim Jong Il in a comprehensive way, it has thoroughly applied it to all state activities. In this country all the people have been firmly armed with the Juche idea and the whole society has been modelled on one ideology . It is administering an independent politics which solves all the problems in line with the Juche idea, giving the first consideration to the revolution of its own country and the interests of its own people, and relying on its own efforts as required by its actual situation. In the closing years of the last century when socialism collapsed one after another in the former Soviet Union and other countries, the DPRK invariably held fast to the banner of socialism. This fact brought home to the international community how firmly the DPRK champions independence. The present reality, in which it steers the drive to make the world independent, displaying its sovereignty and dignity in confrontation with the allied imperialist forces single-handed, also strikes the world community that this country, small as it is, is a politico-ideological power to be reckoned with. The DPRK is a military power no one dares provoke. It has the Korean People's Army (KPA) displaying its might as an invincible army and established a reliable system of all-people, nationwide defence with the KPA as its core, an integral whole of the army and the people which can never be broken even by means of nukes, and a powerful national defence industry capable of manufacturing any state-of-the-art weaponry as it wishes. The DPRK, for its national defence, has consistently pursued the lines of turning the entire army into an army of cadres, modernizing the whole army, arming all the people and fortifying the whole land. In the course of implementing the requirements of the lines of turning the whole army into cadres and modernizing it, the KPA has developed into an invincible armed force fully provided with both powerful offensive and defensive means, whose soldiers are well versed in modern military science, technique and tactics and proficient in using state-of-the-art weapons and other combat equipment. The lines of arming the entire people and turning the whole country into a fortress were carried out at a high level, with the result that all the Koreans have been fully prepared to deal a crushing blow to aggressors in case of emergency, together with servicepersons, and strong defence positions have been built up in all parts of the country so as to turn it into an impregnable fortress. In the closing years of the last century socialism collapsed in some countries all at once, and the allied imperialist forces directed the spearhead of their anti-socialist offensive to the DPRK. Even under such grave situation the DPRK held higher the banner of Songun and has carried out the line of economic construction on giving priority to the development of national defence industry and thus provided itself with the most reliable war deterrent. Towards economic power As it has already held the position of a politico-ideological power and a military giant, the DPRK is now striving for the building of an economic power. Once it hits the goal befitting an economic power, it can be said to be a great, prosperous and powerful nation both in name and reality. Over a decade ago it set the building of a thriving nation as its national target and has so far stepped up its economic construction. Gigantic land realignment projects were carried out on a nationwide scale, hydroelectric power stations mushroomed in different parts of the country and the modernization campaign swept over the industrial establishments across the country. The flames of a new revolutionary upsurge for the building of an economic power are spreading over this country, bringing about miraculous successes one after another. Kwangmyongsong No. I, the first artificial earth satellite in the DPRK, was launched successfully in 1998 to be followed by another one Kwangmyongsong No. 2 last year, drawing the limelight of the world community. The Songjin Steel Complex located in the northeastern part perfected a Juche-based steel-making system of using no cokes and iron scraps. A large number of factories and enterprises have widely introduced the CNC technology, bringing about eye-opening changes in the field of industry as a whole. The builders of the Huichon Power Station, one of the main fronts in building an economic power, opened up a sure prospect for finishing only in a few years the project which would take more than ten years. The February 8 Vinalon Complex is mass-producing vinalon cotton, while the Namhung Youth Chemical Complex producing fertilizers by completing the anthracite gasification of ultramodern standard. All these facts show how nearer the Koreans have come to hit the above-said goal. All the Koreans are now out to dynamically launch the general offensive to fling open the gate to a great, prosperous and powerful nation in 2012 marking the centenary of birth of President Kim Il Sung, father of socialist Korea, as intended by leader Kim Jong Il. This is the appearance of the DPRK today. DPRK's Methodology of Building a Thriving Nation The international community is eyeing the Democratic People's Republic of Korea which is determined to open the gate to a great, prosperous and powerful nation in 2012. - The country already ranks among political, ideological and military powers, and- has attained a high level of science and technology. - It now intends to build a socialist powerful nation by launching a general offensive on all fronts of economic construction for the buildup of an economic power within the year 2012 that marks the centenary of birth of President Kim Il Sung (1912-1994), the founder of socialist Korea. Now there's only a few years left before 2012. In view of the fact that Korea went through harsh economic hardship recently, it is by no means easy to build a thriving: nation. What is the methodology the nation has adopted for accomplishing the cause? Socialist society develops on the strength of the intentional activities of the people who have been imbued with socialist ideology. Tapping to the full the patriotic enthusiasm of the masses with the ideological work well in advance of every other kind of work is an important mode of revolution and construction consistently pursued by Korea. In the past the Korean people achieved liberation from the Japanese imperialists' military rule (August 15, 1945), built a new society, won the war (1950-1953) against the United States and its allied forces, and registered miraculous, achievements in the periods of the postwar rehabilitation, socialist revolution and socialist construction-All these could hardly be thinkable apart from the indomitable spirit of the masses of the people. The people have grown up strong in ideology and faith in the course of breaking through the upheavals of history. Their spiritual strength got evident in the second half of the 1990s when they firmly safeguarded socialism even in the grimmest trials of crushing the persistent anti-socialist - offensive of the imperialists' allied - forces and overcoming repeated natural disasters unprecedented in history. Today the merit constitutes the mightiest driving force in building a thriving nation. - Secondly, Korea is building a prosperous nation with its own raw materials, efforts and technology, that is, on the principle of self-reliance - Satellite launches are typical examples, a full show of their achievements. 1 in 1998 and Kwangmyongsong No. 2 this year, it neither asked others for help in technology nor expected cooperation from them. -. The self-reliance that made Korea win victory after another, surmounting manifold difficulties is demonstrating its might in the present building of a thriving nation as well. Thirdly, Korea is speeding up the construction of a powerful nation in the way of making a place or a unit as an example and generalizing it throughout the country. Under the deep concern of the state and with the painstaking efforts of its residents, Jagang Province has developed into the most flourishing area in the country. They have also raised livestock including goats, sheep, chicken and .rabbits on a large scale and built pig farms to solve the problem of meat. Recently, an c-library and an IT centre were set up in Kanggye City, the seat of provincial government. The nocturnal view of Kanggye City washed by the Jangja River is known as one of the scenic wonders of which Koreans boast. Similar efforts have been made in other provinces to take their cue from the model role played by Jagang Province, thus changing their places better to live in by taking advantages of their local features and merits. Fourthly, the Korean leader Kim Jong Il is giving great encouragement and inspiration to the masses of the people through his personal inspections. He is taking the helm of the all-people general offensive to build a thriving nation- not in his office but on the continued inspection tours. Whenever he gives field guidance, he acquaints himself in detail with the actual conditions on the spot, and encourages the people who are all out to build a powerful nation, solving problems arising in the work and life of officials and workers. Fifthly, the country is constructing a prosperous nation on the principle of managing the economy by a thoroughly socialist method. The socialist economy is, in essence, a planned economy different from the capitalist market economy. It is an economy that all economic activities including production, distribution and consumption of material wealth are undertaken according to a unified plan of the state. In Korea, all its economic potentials are grasped, mobilized and used in an integrated and planned way. A series of measures have been taken to .ensure profitability to the maximum, while maintaining thoroughly the socialist principle in economic management. These measures are paying off in the present building of a thriving nation. DPR Korea Demonstrates Its Might As Impregnable Bulwark of Socialism On September 9, 1948, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) was founded as the first people's democratic state in the East. Since then the DPRK has followed the road of socialism without the slightest vacillation, towering as an impregnable bulwark of socialism. From its inception the DPRK has been pushing ahead with the cause of socialism, guided by the Juche idea and the Songun idea, authored by its founding father President Kim Il Sung (1912-1994). The Juche idea clarifies that the masses of the people are the masters of the revolution and construction and also have the power of driving forward the revolution and construction. It has long served as the main line and fundamental principle in the socialist state building and activities in the DPRK. The Korean-style socialism, which finds independent and creative solutions to all the problems arising in the revolution and construction, based on its own principles, in accordance with the actual conditions of the country and aspirations of the people and by enlisting their inexhaustible strength, has successfully advanced along the road of victory braving whatever the tempest. In the closing years of the previous century when socialism collapsed in some countries, the Korean-style socialism stood firm. The DPRK's invincibility is also backed by its powerful national strength. Socialist Korea is securely based on its independent national economy. The Workers' Party of Korea holds fast to the line of relying on domestic resources,, technology and strength. Self-reliance is Korea's traditional mode of struggle. The solid and powerful foundations and potentials of the independent national economy the DPRK has long built up, overcoming the trials of the "Arduous March" in defence of socialism, the march beset with manifold difficulties, especially the shortages of food, fuel and power caused by the "sanctions" and "blockade" imposed by imperialists, are the springboard for making a leap forward in the building of a great, prosperous and powerful nation. Korea's successful launch of its first artificial earth satellite Kwangmyongsong No. 1. manufactured by its own technology and efforts, in August 1998, to the utter amazement of the whole world, and of its second satellite in April this year that further consolidated its position as a state capable of launching satellites, should suffice to prove how strong its economic foundations are. The DPRK is invincible because it has the rock-solid foundation. Its government reflects the interests of the masses in every line and policy, leads them to give full play to their creativity, and bears responsibility for their livelihood. Thanks to its people-oriented character it enjoys absolute trust and support of its people. It is the first-ever tax-free country on this planet and is also enforcing the systems of free education and medical care at the highest level. The state, the army, the hospitals, various honorary titles and many monumental edifices are all named after "people," testifying to the fact that it is the people-oriented country both in name and in reality. It is quite natural, therefore, that its people are invariably trusting and - following their government. In March,2009 the DPRK held elections to its 12th Supreme People's Assembly, in which all the constituents voted for the candidates for deputies to the SPA, an expression of their determination to strengthen their government. And the First Session of the 12th SPA opened in April,2009 re-elected Kim Jong Il chairman of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK. Ever-Victorious Powerful State of Independence The dignity and might of a county rest with independence. The fact is well proved by the realities of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, which has steadfastly adhered to the line of independence in politics, self-sufficiency in the economy and self-reliance in national defence while thoroughly embodying the ideal of independence, peace and friendship in foreign relations. Ideal of independence The Juche idea, well-known worldwide as a philosophy of independence, comprehensively deals with all the theoretical and practical problems arising in opposing all manners of domination and subordination and realizing the independence of a human being and the masses of the people and the tasks and ways to their settlement. It has also an integrated system of idea, theory and method for advancing the human cause of. independence and bringing it to completion. The Juche idea made clear that independence is the most important attribute of man as a social being and that the human history is the one of struggle of the popular masses to achieve independence. The cause of the masses for independence, however, does not come true of its own accord, but it is inevitably accompanied by the showdown of strength with the imperialist and dominationist forces. Accordingly, it presents itself as the fundamental problem decisive of the cause of independence to give priority to the military buildup. The strong military power guarantees the victory of the masses's cause of independence, the socialist cause and the prosperity of a country and a nation. What embodied this principle is precisely the Songun idea which now comes into the limelight of the international community. The Juche idea, the Songun idea, a steadfast ideal of independence, was authored by President Kim Il Sung, father of socialist Korea, and has been comprehensively systematized into the guiding idea and principle of the DPRK by leader Kim Jong Il. Under banner of independence The Korean people have covered the road of only victory, holding higher the banner of the Juche idea, the Songun idea. The history of the Korean people's struggle for independence has recorded such brilliant victories as the liberation of the country from the Japanese military occupation (1905-1945) through the 15-year-long arduous armed struggle against the Japanese imperialists and the defeat of aggression of the United States boasting of its being the "strongest" in the world in the Korean war (1950-1953) and the defense of national sovereignty and dignity, though the DPRK was less than two years old. Even after the Korean War the DPRK has safeguarded its sovereignty, frustrating ceaseless military threats and challenges on the part of the US. It is well evidenced by the incident of Pueblo, a US armed spy ship, in January 1968, the incident of EC-121, a US large espionage plane, in April 1969, and the Panmunjom incident in August 1976. When the great-power chauvinists pressed it to join the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (COMECON), clamouring about the "integrated economy of socialist countries," the socialist Korea steadfastly adhered to its line of building an independent national economy. Had it not resolutely maintained its independent stand it would have never escaped the same fate as that of the former Soviet Union and other East European countries where socialism collapsed at one fell swoop in the closing years of the last century. Even in the worst adversity under which the imperialist allied forces concentrated their anti-socialist offensives, taking advantage of the collapse of socialism in some countries, the DPRK has safeguarded socialism and ushered in a historical turning point of building a thriving nation, holding higher the banner of Songun. Victory of independent politics Former US President Jimmy Carter who had made a visit to the DPRK said that north Korea is a very unique society which believes in the philosophy of independence as its religion, and that it is a very counter-productive method to apply sanctions against this country. - In defiance of his remarks, the hostile forces against the DPRK continued their pressure and sanctions against it in the new century, too. For the latest instance, when the DPRK announced last year that it would launch its artificial earth satellite Kwangmyongsong No. 2 for peaceful purpose, the hostile forces made much ado about it. even claiming to "intercept" the satellite. Japan, in particular, adopted it as its state policy to "intercept" the Korean satellite. Unperturbed, the DPRK launched its satellite into space on April 5. The US manipulated the United Nations Security Council into adopting a "presidential statement" critical of the DPRK's launch. It is a just right of every country to launch its satellite. If this right is granted to some specific countries, not to all, it cannot but be a dual standard. It is quite incomprehensible how the UNSC could make such a ludicrous blunder. The DPR.K, which regards independence as its lifeline, is not the sort of country to stand this rash act. It demanded the UNSC make a prompt apology for the infringement of its national sovereignty and withdraw all unfair steps. And it warned that, in case the UNSC does not make an immediate apology, it would be compelled to take additional self-defensive measures, including nuclear tests, in order to defend its supreme interests. In the long run, the DPRK conducted its second underground nuclear test on May 25. When the UNSC committed double blunders by adopting on June 12 a "resolution on sanctions" against the DPRK, finding fault with its nuclear test, the latter, resolutely denouncing and rejecting it, declared that it would bolster up its nuclear deterrent and that it would take a decisive military countermeasure against any attempted blockade by the US and its followers, regarding it as an act of war. Counter "sanctions" with retaliation and "confrontation" with an all-out confrontation--this was the reply of the DPRK. In early July it carried out its successive missile launch test, proving that its declaration is by no means a lip service. Present reality of the DPRK clearly shows that independence is precisely truth and the truth is sure to gain an upper hand. The DPRK, an independent power, will always emerge victorious.
