A refreshing lesson to allReader comment on: Belated happy birthday, broken cane! Submitted by Md Hamza Gazi from Bangladesh (Bangladesh), Feb 6, 2012 02:08 I like to keep myself well-informed on national and international issues and events. I'm an avid reader of the printed word, both English and Bangla languages, and a regular to the Weekly Blitz website for stories of importance and substance. Not all that I read pleases me, such as the sinking of the taka and the deplorable situation of law and order in this country to which no politician will admit fault. There's no doubt 'ignorance is bliss', but thanks to some excellent reports I've read I personally cannot claim sanctuary therein. As a father of teenage children the subject of corporal punishment in schools has been of particular interest to my wife and me over the last year or so. I think I read every word written on the subject by Sir Frank Peters and other noted writers. In view of the irrefutable evidence presented, I cannot fathom why it's carried on so long in our school system unchecked. We are indeed a nation of hypocrites to say on one side we love our children and that the children are the future of Bangladesh, while sending them daily into punishment cells called classrooms to be, verbally abused, physically beaten, tortured and possibly scarred mentally for life, if not physically, as well. It's been noted in a number of recent reports, including this one "Belated happy birthday broken cane" that Sir Frank has thanked and praised Justices Imman Ali and Sheikh Hassan Arif and some others for the roles they played in trying to eliminate the brutal inhuman exercises from the classrooms. His modesty is refreshing and a lesson to all, but he himself should also be included on the Honor Roll and deserves applause and admiration from every school pupil in the nation, as well as my family. It's to the shame of some errant teachers they cannot see the serious dangers of corporal punishment as Sir Frank and us parents do, or they just don't care, which is even more shameful.
