Why not a higher minimum wage!Reader comment on: Bangladesh sets minimum wages for textile workers Submitted by Afzal from Canada (Canada), Jul 29, 2010 08:09 The politicians are clueless about how a global economy functions. Bangladesh's relies heavily on low wages for its competitive edge in the global garments market. It makes no difference to the likes of Zara, Walmart & JC Penney whether their finished garments come from BD, Vietnam, Cambodia or Haiti - they are p**s at chasing the lowest $$ cost purchase. Hence, the 80% payhike [greater than 80%, as a lot of social benefits are a percentage of the basic salary] will never be absorbed by the customer - it must come from the existing margin of the manufacturer, forcing many of them to close. I'd rather see a 200% one-shot payhike so that only the highly efficient producers survive & the others promptly close shop. The govt's surge in popularity will be short-lived.
