Islamic Relief diverting cash to Indian radical Islamic group

India-based radical Islamic group, Anfar Foundation has received one million dollars from Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW), although IRW accounts are frozen in the EU countries for its involvement in terrorist activities and for having relations with Hamas and Muslim Brotherhood.

In 2017, Bangladesh has banned three Islamic aid organizations including Islamic Relief Worldwide from working in the Rohingya refugee camps as preventive measures against potential radicalization in the camps.

Earlier a former leader of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lodged a police complaint against another radical Islamic group named Ajmal Foundation for allegedly receiving over 8 million dollars from various foreign sources connected to Al Qaeda, Hamas, and Hizbul Mujahideen.

Confirming the filing of the case against Badruddin Ajmal, the founder of Ajmal Foundation, Guwahati police told Indian media that an investigation is going on against Ajmal Foundation’s possible connections with radical Islamic terror outfits including Hamas.

According to Indian police sources, the foundation has been charged with sections of the Indian Penal Code and Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, which prohibits acceptance and utilization of foreign contribution for any activities “detrimental to national interest”.

Earlier in a tweet, a right-wing organization – the Legal Rights Observatory said: “The Ajmal Foundation of Badruddin Ajmal got ₹ 69.55 crore for education, but used only ₹ 2.05 core for it, and routed the rest for (his party) AIUDF… Turkish and UK terror groups also funded it in crores.

In the tweet message, Legal Rights Observatory has shared several documents in favor of their claim.

Dr Khasrul Islam, Director of the Ajmal Foundation said most of their funding comes from Britain, but refuted charges about their donors having terrorist links.

It may be mentioned here that senior officials of Islamic Relief Worldwide, a British registered charity, have regularly published social media posts showing support for Hamas and Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, and circulating conspiracy theories. Ammar Elkhateeb, an IRW employee, posted pictures of Hamas’s Ezzedine Al Qassam Brigades fighters praying in memory of Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohammed Morsi.

Meanwhile, with the world in the grips of a pandemic, IRW employee Mohammad Irfaan shared a conspiracy theory that the coronavirus was “planned 10 years ago by the Rockefellers”.

Germany takes action against IRW

The German government has ceased funding to aid Islamic Relief Worldwide over its alleged ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, the Interior Ministry said in response to a request for information from an opposition party.

A spokesman for the ministry told journalists it had information that both Islamic Relief Worldwide and Islamic Relief Deutschland (IRD) had “significant personal links to the Muslim Brotherhood” or related organizations and affiliates.

In 2018, a local German news outlet, citing German Intelligence and security sources, said an official report has concluded that German security authorities consider the Muslim Brotherhood group as “more dangerous” to Germany’s democracy, compared to the ISIS.

Canada patronizes Islamist groups

In August this year, the Canadian government had launched a new aid fund consisting of numerous partner charities that included IRW.

International actions against IRW

In 2014, the United Arab Emirates authorities banned IRW due to its links with the Muslim Brotherhood, which Hamas originated from an offshoot of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood in the late 1980s.

In 2016, Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) severed ties with Islamic Relief Worldwide.

Beyond the alleged ties between Islamic Relief, Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood, the charity came under fire in July 2020 when its director Heshmay Khalifa was forced to resign following the surfacing of his Facebook posts that referred to Jews as the “grandchildren of monkeys and pigs”.

Likewise, in 2014 and 2015, Khalifa referred to the Egyptian president as a “Zionist pimp”, while he praised Hamas calling it “the purest resistance movement in the modern history”.

The reason behind IRW’s funding in Indian

It is a matter of grave concern as to why an organization like IRW, which has connections with mega-terror outfit Hamas and Muslim Brotherhood have been sending millions of dollars to Islamist organizations in India, particularly in the northeastern region, where radical Islamic terrorist groups have a significant presence. Indian authorities need to immediately investigate the matter and stop the inflow of Islamist funds into that country, as such money may ultimately go into the hands of local jihadist outfits.
