According to media reports, law enforcement agency members have arrested Junaid Al Habib, president of pro-Caliphate Hefazat-e-Islam Dhaka city unit over his link to the Shapla Chattar violence in Dhaka on May 5, 2013.

Government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the members of law enforcement and intelligence agencies well-deserve our support and appreciation for taking stern action against the culprits of Hefazat-e-Islam. We believe, government will also take legal actions against those Hefazat leaders, who have already been found guilty in an investigation conducted by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) for their direct involvement behind the death of Shah Ahmad Shafi. At the same time, we are calling upon the government to take stern action against those Hefazat supporters and anti-government forces, who were giving instigation to countrywide terrorist acts of Hefazat and its cohorts as well as were inciting communal riot and jihad. This newspaper has identified several culprits, who were continuing notoriety during Hefazat’s countrywide mayhem.

It may be recalled here that, Hefazat-e-Islam and other anti-government forces went into countrywide terrorist activities under the pretense of protesting the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Government facilities, private and public properties, Awami League offices and homes of Hindus were vandalized and set on fire by the members of Hefazat and its cohorts.

Hefazat-e-Islam will not be spared

Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque said that Hefazat-e-Islam will not be spared in any way for carrying out violence on March 27-27.

“They have hurt the spirit of the Liberation War by taking stand against the state, therefore, fair trials would be ensured,” he said.

The minister made the remarks after paying homage to the portrait of the Father of the Nation at Dhanmondi No. 32 on the occasion of historic Mujibnagar Day.

Hefazat-e-Islam carried out the violence from March 26 to March 27 in imitation of what the Pakistanis did in 1971. Hefazat will have to face trial legally; they will not be exempted from this in any way, he said.

“Hefazat does not respect our national anthem, does not fly the national flag,” he said adding, that “They do not believe in the spirit of the liberation war, we have liberated the country by fighting for our lives with a lot of bloods.

“They have burnt down our government offices, courts and Ustad Alauddin Khan’s house, so this situation cannot be accepted in any way,” he said.

Junaid Babunagari involved in the death of Shah Ahmad Shafi

The Bangladesh police has found Chief of the hardline Islamist group of Hefazat-e-Islam Junaid Babungarai involved in the death of Ahmad Shafi who was the former chief of Hefazat and head of the largest madrasa of Bangladesh at Hathazari in Chattogram.

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) filed its report to the local court at Chattogram in the alleged murder of the Ahmad Shafi on Monday. It has named 43 people including the current Chief of Hefazat-e-Islam Junaid Babungari for activities that led to the death of the founding chief of Hefazat Ahmad Shafi.

Ahmad Shafi died last year on Sept 18 at the age of 104. A case was filed in December alleging that the death of Ahmad Shafi was a ‘planned murder’. The local court ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the allegations and submit the report.

Established in 2010, the Hefazat-e-Islam controls the largest number of madrasas running into thousands in Bangladesh. It came into prominence for its hardline Islamist demands during the 2013 Shahbagh protest movement in Dhaka. In its 13 point charter of demand in 2013, Hefazat-e-Islam had demanded anti blasphemy law with death penalty, ban on erecting sculptures, declaring Ahmadiyas as non-Muslims, restrictions on social gathering between men and women among others.
