Hilton, in partnership with the United Nations Environment Program in West Asia and Winnow, announced the launch of the “Green Ramadan” initiative, which is being implemented to promote efforts to reduce food waste in a number of countries in the Middle East, including the State of Qatar, at the Waldorf Astoria Lusail Hotel Doha.
The partnership brings together Hilton’s efforts to achieve net zero emissions for the future, the United Nations Environment Program’s “Recipe for Change” campaign aimed at reducing food waste, and Winnow’s artificial intelligence technologies that allow digital tracking of food waste during Ramadan.
In Qatar, the Waldorf Astoria Lusail Doha Hotel offers its guests a gourmet experience at Baywater Restaurant, which overlooks stunning views of the Arabian Gulf. The restaurant prides itself on serving delicious dishes that include ingredients from local produce from Al Wabra farm, offering an innovative selection of dishes in a thoughtful manner that helps reduce emissions associated with food preparation. The hotel is also collaborating with the Hifz Al Nima Food Bank with the aim of promoting giving during the holy month. “As a global brand in the hospitality sector, Hilton is responsible for leading the sector towards sustainable solutions, and we are pleased to welcome the holy month of Ramadan with the Green Ramadan initiative,” said Emma Banks, Hilton’s vice president of Food and Beverage Strategy and Development EMEA.
Sami Dimassi, Representative of the United Nations Environment Program and Regional Director for West Asia, said: “We are pleased to partner with Hilton to activate this campaign in the company’s most prominent markets in the Middle East. Reducing food waste is not only concerned with saving food, but also protecting and saving resources.
“Our goal with this collaboration is to support efforts through data and behavioral science, as we will provide an approach that helps companies operating in the sector deal with food waste,” said Mark Zornes, CEO and co-founder of Winnow.
