Israeli Mossad accused of helping pro-Islamist party in Bangladesh

A minor Bangla-language daily has published a report claiming Israeli intelligence agency Mossad is working with Tarique Rahman, a self-exiled convicted leader of pro-Islamist Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in arranging a meeting between Tarique Rahman and controversial Turkish spiritual leader Muhammed Fethullah Gülen.

Muhammed Fethullah Gülen, born on April 27, 1941 is a Turkish Islamic scholar, preacher, and a one-time opinion leader, as de facto leader of the Gülen movement. Gülen is designated an influential neo-Ottomanist, Anatolian panethnicist, Islamic poet, writer, social critic, and activist–dissident developing a Nursian theological perspective that embraces democratic modernity, as a citizen of Turkey (until his denaturalization by the government in 2017) he was a local state imam from 1959 to 1981. Over the years, Gülen became a centrist political figure in Turkey prior to his being there as a fugitive. Since 1999, Gülen has lived in self-exile in the United States near Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania.

In the report titled ‘Secret meeting between Tarique Rahman with Fethullah Gulen through the mediation of Israel!’, Bangla-language minor daily newspaper Vorer Pata (Morning Leaf) which was published on October14, 2022 claimed, Israeli intelligence agency Mossad is trying to arrange a meeting between BNP leader Tarique Rahman and Muhammed Fethullah Gülen.

The report termed Pakistan as a “cordial ally” of Israel and said, this connection between Tarique Rahman and Israeli Mossad is being coordinated by Pakistan. It also said, in exchange for arranging the meeting, Israel Mossad will receive US$1 million as service charge.

Vorer Pata further claimed that in addition to US$1 million service charge, Israeli Mossad has also demanded that if it will help BNP in returning to power, Tarique Rahman will allow Israel to begin trade with Bangladesh freely under the garb of various companies. It further said, at the request of Pakistan, Israel has promised to establish communication between Tarique Rahman and Gülen.

It may be mentioned here that, although Bangla-language newspaper claims of Pakistan and Israel having cordial relations in reality such relationship actually exists between India and Israel for decades. Pakistan does not recognize the existence of the Jewish State. Instead, it has been a genuine friend and ally of the Palestinian side.

Talking to this correspondent, a credible source said, Pakistan has extremely cordial relations with Palestinian Authority, while Mahmoud Abbas and few other Palestinian leaders and scholars are having good rapport with Muhammed Fethullah Gülen. The source termed Bangla daily Vorer Pata report as “outrageously bogus”.

It further said, Bangladesh Nationalist Party hold deeper hatred towards the State of Israel, while the founder of this party, General Ziaur Rahman was a friend of Yasser Arafat.

Fethullah Gülen and Israel

In 2016, in an article titled “Who is Pro Israel”, Fethullah Gülen wrote on his own website:

If you want to undermine the image and prestige of those who raise views that are different from those of the government in the “new Turkey,” the best thing you can do is accuse them of being traitors or pro-Israeli or pro-American.

Central Bank of Turkey Governor Erdem Başçı is the latest to face accusations of treason by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Previously, Turkish Industrialists and Businessmen’s Association (TÜSİAD) Chairman Muharrem Yılmaz was also subjected to the same treatment. Those who feel close to the Hizmet movement have been dubbed traitors for over a year.

Blaming someone for being pro-Israeli or pro-American is pretty effective because Israel and the US are the two countries that Turkish society views as the greatest threat to national security. So you can just claim a link between the people you dislike and these two countries. And you do not need to be consistent or present proof. And if you are not concerned about telling the truth, those who love you take your word without questioning your credibility.

Those who advise Erdoğan first accused the Hizmet movement of cooperation with the CIA. And Erdoğan made a statement that undermined this allegation: The CIA and the National Intelligence Organization (MİT) would collaborate against Fethullah Gülen. Nobody asked about the previous allegation that the Hizmet movement was controlled by the CIA, given that MİT and the CIA planned a joint operation against the movement. Besides, all these allegations were made by Erdoğan unilaterally. The US did not make any statement confirming them. In addition, the pro-government media — which argued a few months ago that Gülen received money from the CIA — published reports arguing that the CIA was coopering with MİT.

Is Mossad working for BNP leader Tarique Rahman?

Bangla daily Vorer Pata report loses steam when it said Pakistan is the cordial ally of Israel. It is a grossly wrong statement. In reality, Israel maintains deeper relationship with India for decades.

Mossad agents in Bangladesh

Few years ago, an individual named Shipan Kumer Basu was publicly proclaiming as “Mossad agent” while his guru Mendi Safadi, an Israeli Druze was endorsing such claims of Basu. But recently it was revealed that Shipan Kumer Basu was having no connections with Israel or its intelligence agency Mossad. Instead he was working for an aide of Partha Chatterjee, a junior minister in West Bengal in India who is now in jail on allegations of receiving bribes worth billions of Rupees which is infamously known as “SSC Scam”.

Later another individual, a university professor with initial “N” has been publicly proclaiming as Mossad agent. According to several sources in Dhaka, this professor visited Israel in 2012 via Nepal and made frantic bids of meeting some officials in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Since then, Professor ‘N’ has been openly proclaiming of having “deep connection” with Israeli Mossad and even claims that officials in Mossad and “Israeli key establishments” consider him as an “expert on Bangladesh affairs”.
