Although Gotabaya Rajapaksa succeeded in fleeing Sri Lanka by bribing several top officials of the army, shadows of this notoriously corrupt man and members of the Rajapaksa Dynasty are still holding important offices in the country, including the parliament and the armed forces. With the existence of plenty of shadows of the Rajapaksas, Sri Lanka may not succeed in overcoming the current economic crises even in the nearest future. Sri Lanka’s democracy is in total mess, while country’s economic backbone has been fractured. The current scenarios in Sri Lanka can scare away investors and tourists, while the country actually will need many years in curing the severe damaged the Rajapaksa Dynasty has caused to it.

According to information, while Sri Lanka’s former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa succeeded in fleeing the country by bribing several key officials of the Sri Lankan Army, some news outlets are spreading rumor claiming his visa request was rejected by the US authorities. But this newspaper has already obtained solid evidence of Gotabaya Rajapaksa until now holding American citizenship.

According to document Nandasena Gotabaya Rajapaksa (date of birth June 20, 1949 was issue Type-P passport number 488058270 by the United States Department of State on October 31, 2012 and the passport is valid until October 30, 2022. Meaning, Gotabaya Rajapaksa did not leave his US citizenship when he became Sri Lanka’s president, although several Sri Lankan news portals, quoting Indian newspaper The Hindu said:

The United States rejected Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s recent request for a visa to leave the country.

Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, formerly a dual citizen of Sri Lanka and the U.S., has taken steps to withdraw his American citizenship due to Sri Lanka’s Constitution preventing him from running for the presidential election in the year 2019.

The Hindu says that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who decided to step down from the presidency before the end of his tenure due to public opposition mounted due to the current economic crisis and the fuel crisis, has applied for a visa to travel to the United States.

Citing an official in Colombo, “The Hindu” website reported that the American authorities have rejected Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s visa request to come to America after leaving the presidency.

“He sought a safe passage to the US after the recent events, but it was denied”, the Colombo-based official was quoted as saying on Tuesday.

However, The Hindu said it sought a comment from the American Embassy in Colombo but is yet to receive a response.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa was evacuated from the President’s House before the protesters breached the heavily guarded complex and took over the official residence. However, his whereabouts remained unknown until it was reported that he fled Sri Lanka in a military aircraft and landed in Maldives.

Meanwhile, according to experts on Sri Lanka affairs, it is extremely difficult for the Sri Lankan populace to burry the Rajapaksa Dynasty. They will return to power soon, while Namal Rajapaksa, son of Mahinda Rajapaksa is already seeing the public wrath faced by their family as “temporary setback”.
