Members of Russian intelligence agency, the Federal Security Service (FSB) intercepted a would-be suicide attacker of Islamic State (ISIS), who was plotting to blow himself and assassinate Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s former spokesperson Nupur Sharma.

According to FSB, the would-be suicide bomber was recruited in Turkey by Islamic State (ISIS) and was provided training for accomplishing the mission of killing himself in suicide attack targeting Nupur Sharma.

The man was radicalized on social media and met a representative of ISIS in Istanbul to record a video statement pledging allegiance before going on the mission to India. In this video, the man reportedly expressed joy at accomplishing his mission of killing Nupur Sharma and had reportedly warned “infidels” and “non-Muslims” to refrain from insulting the Prophet of Islam.

Although FSB did not mention the name of Nupur Sharma, it only described the intended target of the ISIS terrorist attack as a “member of the ruling circles of India”.

While FSB said the man was a citizen of an unnamed Central Asian nation, who was “staying in the Turkish Republic between April and June 2022”, a source told this correspondent that the ISIS man is either a citizen of Tajikistan or Uzbekistan.

The agency also released a video in which the suspect, whose face was blurred, confessed to pledging allegiance to Islamic State. He was speaking in broken Russian and said he received “special training” and was supposed to meet a handler in India who would provide him with the “necessary materials for a terrorist attack”. The Indian target allegedly insulted the Prophet Mohammed, he said.
