40% cases increased in one day, is another wave of Kovid coming?

The cases of Kovid-19 infection have suddenly started increasing in India. The country reported 3,016 new cases this morning, a 40 percent increase from Wednesday. So has a new wave of Covid-19 pandemic hit India? Experts have different opinions on this question. Some experts believe that India is going through a new wave of Kovid epidemic, but in the opinion of some experts, cases of infection have definitely increased but will stop soon.

The infection rate in India is currently 2.73 percent. But in Maharashtra, which was badly affected, the rate was recorded at 20.05 percent on Wednesday in Solapur and 17.47 percent in Sangli. The number of people found infected after testing 100 people is called the infection rate.

It is a matter of concern that the infection rate in Maharashtra was only 1.05 percent about 4 weeks ago, but between March 22 and March 28, it increased to 6.15 percent.

Maharashtra Health Secretary Sanjay Khandare told BLiTZ that special attention was being paid to genome sequencing of those found infected by RT-PCR.

“A new variant of Omicron – XBB.1.16 – has surfaced, due to which cases are increasing in some districts,” he said. Maharashtra recorded 694 new Covid cases today but no death. Maximum 846 active cases of infection were found in Mumbai in the state. After that Pune has 773 and Thane has 524 active cases.

Some experts are of the view that the country is facing a new wave of Covid pandemic. Rajeev Jayadevan, co-chairman (national) of the Covid Task Force of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), says, “It is a wave. Nothing can be said about its seriousness at the moment. But all the variants are from Omicron, so we think this one will not be as dangerous as the last wave. There are not many cases of XBB.1.16 in Kerala. States should lay more emphasis on genome sequencing to keep an eye on new variants.

Some experts say that new cases will increase for some time but then they will start decreasing. Mahindra Agarwal, professor at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, told BLiTZ, “Covid cases were coming in very less till a few days back. Now the cases have increased a bit, so it seems more than before. As soon as their daily number crosses 10,000, they will start decreasing rapidly. Aggarwal said that the current situation may not turn into a wave and cases may come down after increasing for some time.

There were 215 new cases in Kerala on Wednesday. The state government has issued necessary guidelines for all the districts.

So is the infection in people increasing due to the new variant or is the immunity of the people decreasing? Virologists say that information related to the people who are getting infected should be collected, only then it will be known whether the immunity is not decreasing. Renowned virologist Jacob John said that people who did not take booster doses are at an increasing risk of getting infected by the Kovid-19 pandemic. John said that senior citizens and people already suffering from some disease must be given a second booster dose. Jayadevan says that healthy people will not need boosters.

Doctors say that they are not getting serious cases of Covid. The cases that are coming have high fever and symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection. Most people have taken a booster dose. Two Covid patients have been admitted to Fortis Hospital in Delhi in the last two weeks. Both are elderly and kept in the intensive care unit. Dr. Vikas Maurya, Director and Head of Department (Pulmonology) at Fortis Hospital, said, “The immunity of patients is decreasing. In influenza, new variants of the virus are seen every year for the vaccine. We have to decide that even in the case of Kovid, there is no need to do so.

Meanwhile, the Delhi government has said that even after the infection rate is more than 10 percent, the cases are not increasing, so there is no need to panic. Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj said, “We have issued an advisory to all symptomatic patients to wear masks.”
