Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday quoted Mahatma Gandhi’s lines after being sentenced to two years in jail in a criminal defamation case lodged in 2019 over his ‘Modi surname’ remark, saying truth is God for him.

He tweeted, “My religion is based on truth and non-violence. Truth is my God, non-violence the means to achieve it – Mahatma Gandhi. A Surat court on Thursday convicted Rahul Gandhi in the case and sentenced him to two years imprisonment. The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Verma convicted Gandhi under section 504 of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace. However, the court also granted bail to Rahul Gandhi and stayed his sentence for 30 days, so that the Congress leader could challenge its decision in a higher court.

Gandhi was present in the court during the hearing of the case. The case was registered against Rahul Gandhi for his remark in which he had allegedly said, “Why all thieves have the same surname Modi?” BJP) leader and MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi had lodged the complaint.

Gandhi, a Lok Sabha member from Wayanad, made the alleged remark at a public meeting held in Kolar, Karnataka ahead of the 2019 general elections. The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Verma had last week heard the final arguments of both the parties and fixed March 23 for pronouncement of the verdict.
