New Delhi, March 23 – In his first reaction to the Surat court’s conviction for criminal defamation, Rahul Gandhi quoted Mahatma Gandhi in a tweet saying, “My religion is based on truth and non-violence, Truth is my God, And nonviolence is my religion. Violence is one way of achieving it.”

Rahul’s sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also took to Twitter to express her support. He said, ‘The fearful forces are adopting all the tactics to bring down the voice of Rahul Gandhi, but my brother is never scared. We live by speaking the truth and will always speak the truth and raise our voice for the country.

He asserted that Rahul’s strength comes from the power of truth and the support of millions of people.

Gujarat’s Surat district court in 2019 convicted Congress MP Rahul Gandhi for his alleged ‘Modi surname’ remark. He was found guilty under sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code, which carry a maximum sentence of two years.

The case against Rahul Gandhi was filed by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi in response to Gandhi’s alleged remark, “How can all thieves be surnamed Modi…”
