Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina asked her party leaders and workers to make the party stronger at the grassroots as the national election is approaching.

“The election is approaching. So, we have to pay attention to make the Awami League (AL) more strong,” she said while presiding over the AL Central Working Committee (ALCWC) meeting at her official residence Ganabhaban.

The Prime Minister said that it has been possible to handle the Covid-19 situation as AL is in power.

She reminded her party leaders and workers that her government has been able to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic single handedly as the AL appeared as a strong organization at the grassroots.

The AL chief continued that relentless supports from the leaders and activists of her party and its associate bodies alongside the efforts from
the government machinery have made possible to control the Covid-19 situation.

She, however, said though the AL leaders and activists have been standing beside the distressed people at the time when they have no work or are locked inside rooms due to Coronavirus by risking their lives, no other political party stands by them rather criticizes the government and gives speeches.

“We have seen no political parties to stand by the destitute people. They have no interest. They only give speeches and criticise the Awami League on regular basis. They are doing nothing for the people,” she continued.

Preparations for next general elections

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said the ruling party has decided to take preparation for the next general election.

“The Awami League has decided to start preparation for the next parliamentary election. To this end, the sub-committees of the party have been instructed to update its election manifesto,” he told reporters after a meeting of the AL executive committee.

AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presided over the meeting held at Ganabhaban here.

Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said the meeting was held during 10.30 am to 3 pm, focusing on organizational issues and election preparation.

He said the AL sub-committees have been instructed to update the election manifesto and the AL president also listened to the statements of some members of the sub-committees.

The AL general secretary said eight organizational secretaries of the party submitted their written reports at the meeting, while AL joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif also presented a report.

He said they also submitted their union parishad level reports, highlighting the ground reality, before the AL president and she gave necessary directives in this regard.

Quader said the rebel candidates, who participated in the Pabna municipality election, sent letters to the AL office seeking apology and they were forgiven.

In this context, he said, it was also warned that immediate action should be taken against those who were violating the party’s discipline in different places and they would not be spared.

“AL chief Sheikh Hasina also warned there are propaganda and conspiracy against the government. As the election is getting closer, the level of propaganda is on the rise. We have to respond to these propaganda and must get united against these plots,” the AL general secretary said.

During the meeting, he said, the prime minister expressed satisfaction and gratitude to the leaders of the AL affiliated bodies for standing by the country’s people amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
