On the International Women’s Day, Tashnuva Anan Shishir, a Bangladeshi transgender will begin her journey as a newscaster on a private television channel named ‘Boishakhi TV’. The channel authority appointed Tashnuva as the first-ever transgender newscaster in the country on the august occasion of the 50th anniversary of independence of Bangladesh.

Boishakhi TV authorities told the media that the liberation of the people of the country, building a livable, non-discriminatory society for all— were the keys to Bangladesh’s independence. In the implementation of that motto, in the 50 years of independence, a news anchor of the transgender group, the most neglected population of the country has been appointed.

The government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken various initiatives to establish the dignity and rights of the neglected citizens. The names of people of the transgender, as well as men and women, are now being registered in the voter list. The government is also giving allowances to a large number of people in this community.

The Boishakhi TV authorities believe that a change in the mindset of all is essential to ensure the continuous and sustainable development of transgender people.

Dulal Khan, Public Relations Officer of the television channel, told the media, “We, Boishakhi Television have added two transgender women to the news and drama of our channel on the eve of Golden Jubilee of Independence and Women’s Day in March. This is the first time that the people of the country will see a transgender woman presenting news in an official news bulletin, which has never happened before in the 50 years of independence.”

He added that on March 8, 2021 (Monday) International Women’s Day, Tasnuva Annan Shishir will present her first news bulletin on Boishakhi Television. Through this, Boishakhi Television is going to set an unprecedented example in the country. From then on, Tasnuva Annan will present the news regularly.

Dulal Khan said, “Similarly, we have added another transgender woman named Nusrat Mau to one of the main characters of our entertainment department’s regular dramas.

Tashnuva Anan Shishir, a talented model and actor began her acting career in 2007 with the theatre troupe Natua. She has been a part of the theatre troupe BotTola for more than two years, appearing in many notable productions. She is set to appear in two full-length feature films this year.

A dancer, model and a voice artiste, Tashnuva’s precedence as the first ever transgender news presenter will inspire thousands of transgender women in our country.

“I want to build a team with aspiring dancers, actors and media personalities from the transgender community to raise awareness about the obstacles we face. I want to help these individuals build sustainable livelihoods,” shares Tashnuva. “We need to prioritize people’s capabilities over their gender identities.”
