China has threatened to retaliate over a meeting between Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and Speaker of the US House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy in Los Angeles.
The President of Taiwan is about to visit America. Recently, diplomatic pressure has increased on Taiwan, while China has been trying to win its diplomatic allies over to its side. Meanwhile, China has been sending fighter jets towards Taiwan on a daily basis.
Sai will visit New York on March 30 during her visit to Guatemala and Belize. He is expected to make a stopover in Los Angeles on April 5 on his way back to Taiwan. During that time she can meet McCarthy.
Zhu Fenglian, spokeswoman for the Cabinet Office for Taiwan Affairs, on Wednesday condemned Tsai’s plan to stay in the US and demanded that no US officials should meet her.
“We firmly oppose this and will give a strong response,” Zhu told a news conference. He said the US should refrain from arranging for Sai Ing Wen’s transit visits and contact with US officials.
At the same time, the US should take concrete action to fulfill its commitment not to support Taiwan independence, he said.
