Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu may be released from Patiala jail on April 1. This information was given by his advocate HPS Verma on Friday. Sidhu, 59, is serving a one-year jail term in the 1988 road rage case.

The former Punjab Congress chief had surrendered in a Patiala court after which he was sent to jail on May 20 last year. The Supreme Court sentenced him to one year’s rigorous imprisonment.

The Supreme Court in its order had said that any sympathy shown for awarding inadequate punishment would further damage the justice system and would adversely affect public confidence in the efficacy of the law.

Gurnam Singh, an elderly man of 65 years was killed in this incident. Verma said that according to the Punjab Jail Manual, a convict with good conduct is entitled to remission. Verma said that there is a high probability that he would be released from Patiala jail on Saturday.
