Defense Minister calls for making India capable of dealing with cyber and space threats

New Delhi, May 15 (Hindustan Times). Defense Minister Rajnath Singh called for making India fully capable of dealing with emerging threats related to cyber and space. On Monday, at the 12th convocation of the Defense Institute of Advanced Technology (DIA), Pune, the Defense Minister said that independent decisions on global issues cannot be taken without India’s self-reliance. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said that the purpose of self-reliance is to meet the needs of our armed forces as well as to meet the security needs of our friendly countries.

Highlighting the deep connection between cutting-edge technologies and defense research, Rajnath Singh also called upon institutions like DIAT to come up with new innovations that are not only useful for the defense sector, but are equally effective for civilians .

Explaining the government’s vision to achieve ‘self-reliance’ in defence, the Defense Minister made it clear that India must progress in advanced technology to deal with emerging threats related to cyber and space. Self-reliance does not mean isolation, but it means meeting one’s own needs as well as meeting the needs of friendly countries.

He said that if our adversary has more advanced technologies, it may be a cause of concern for us in the future. There is an urgent need to move fast towards technological advancement to keep up with the changing times. This is the responsibility of our institutions.

Raksha Mantri said that in order to promote self-reliance, the Ministry of Defense has issued a positive indigenization list of four, in which the import of 4,666 strategically important line replacement units, sub-systems and spares has been banned. He described these steps as proof of the government’s firm commitment to achieve ‘self-reliance’ in the defense sector.

DIAT Chancellor and Raksha Mantri conferred degrees to 283 students including 261 M.Tech., M.Sc., 22 Ph.D. during the convocation ceremony. A total of 20 gold medals were awarded to the students during this period.

Rajnath Singh also visited the laboratory demonstrations of various research activities carried out at DIAT.
