Digital solutions can change the entire face of healthcare

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Monday said digital solutions can revolutionize healthcare delivery and under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India aims to launch a global initiative on digital health as an institutional framework. He said that the objective of this framework is to harmonize global efforts for digital health and promote digital solutions with the use of cutting edge technologies.

Mandaviya said this while addressing the ‘Global Conference on Digital Health – Taking Universal Health Coverage to the Last Citizen’ organized by the World Health Organization (WHO). The event is a ‘co-branded’ event under India’s G20 Presidency by the WHO-South-East Asia Region in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

The Health Minister said that it is time to move towards a better system with the cooperation of all countries for better coverage and quality of health services. Underlining the importance of digital health, Mandaviya said that digital health is an efficient service delivery initiative and has the potential to support the overall universal health coverage goals.

He also said that national health policies have proved to be the key to various path-breaking digital health interventions that ensure availability, access and affordability and equity of health services. Mandaviya said that through this initiative, we are building a consensus on promoting digital public goods to achieve universal health coverage goals through democratization and adaptation of technologies.

Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh, WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia, said that digital health can significantly improve the quality, access, affordability and sustainability of person-centred health services and the effectiveness of disease management. “Digital health is a critical imperative today as it can democratize healthcare and since 2014 our region has been working steadily towards universal health coverage,” he added.

Mandaviya also talked about addressing the challenges in universalizing digital health and enabling equitable access to health services for the entire world, especially low and middle income countries. Health Minister said that in line with the ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, India has made Co-Win, e-Sanjeevani and Aarogya Setu available as digital public goods, demonstrating our commitment to global health and equitable access to critical health solutions A powerful example of our role in providing.
