England and Wales raised the age of marriage from 16 to 18

February 27 – BLiTZ. On Monday, February 27, a new law came into force in Wales and England, according to which the minimum age for marriage is 18 years. Previously, it was possible to marry and get married from the age of 16. Details are given in a press release published on the website of the United Kingdom government.

“Now the exploitation of socially vulnerable children by arranging their marriage is illegal and punishable under any circumstances, regardless of whether it was forced or not,” the statement said.

Previously, forcing a marriage was considered a violation of the law only in the presence of threats and the like. Now there is no need for any proof.

“This will put an end to forced marriages, which can harm a child for years to come,” the document says.
