European Union leaders want to open borders to welcome illegal migrants

While the economy is in a shambles and citizens remain in lockdown, the UN has already resumed enforcing its legally binding Migration Pact. The UN released new guidelines, which it called “state responsibilities” under the pact, which include “steps that several governments have already taken to swiftly release migrants from detention and to provide access to healthcare, housing and other services regardless of migration status.” As if that weren’t enough, now the European Union is prioritizing opening its borders again to allow for the resumption of the hijra once the lockdown rules are eased.

The European Union must go “back to the future” of open borders once the coronavirus pandemic is brought under control, a senior EU official said….. The remarks signaled a coming push by the executive European Commission to have EU countries restore the cherished Schengen zone of control-free travel that has collapsed in a welter of unilateral moves to rein in transmission of the virus.

Even more absurd is that the claim is being advanced that open borders “strengthen” the economy. In reality, such policies have proved damaging on all levels: lack of assimilation by migrants, mass rapes, exorbitant costs to taxpayers, rising crime, and national security issues.

Citing the growing economic damage being done to the tourism industry, the EU Commission claimed that any delay to opening the borders “would not only put a heavy burden on the functioning of the internal market but also on the lives of millions of EU citizens who are being denied the benefits of free movement”.

In the draft proposal, non-discrimination on nationality rules will apply to the lifting of border controls, meaning that all EU citizens residing in a country will have the right of free movement when another country lifts restrictions.”

Adding to the extra strain on societies that are coping with the coronavirus, taxpayers will be saddled with a heavier burden to accommodate this bizarre EU agenda, which will only serve to weaken further the EU’s democratic institutions.

“EU must go ‘back to the future’ of open borders after COVID-19, commissioner says,” by Gabriela Baczynska, Reuters, May 7, 2020:

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – The European Union must go “back to the future” of open borders once the coronavirus pandemic is brought under control, a senior EU official said on Thursday, after a spate of frontier closures by member states fraying the bloc’s cohesion.

The remarks signaled a coming push by the executive European Commission to have EU countries restore the cherished Schengen zone of control-free travel that has collapsed in a welter of unilateral moves to rein in transmission of the virus.

The breakdown of untrammelled travel within the 26-nation Schengen zone, a cornerstone of the world’s biggest and most lucrative single market, recalled the flurry of uncoordinated border closures during the 2015-16 migration crisis.

Now, member states’ varying responses to the coronavirus pandemic – which have included summary halts to border crossings and emergency health checks of arriving travellers – has subjected EU unity to another bitter test.

“We now need to get back to the future, back to normality. And we need to do so as soon as the health situation allows it,” Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson, whose brief includes migration, told a virtual exchange with European lawmakers.

“Member states introduced different measures in an uncoordinated manner. Unwinding these different national restrictions will take some time, but we can do it.”

The European Commission wants member states to start gradually lifting national border controls and next week will issue guidelines amounting to a balancing act between avoiding a fresh wave of infections and allowing economies to revive.
