Farmers do solarization of soil in summer season, soil will remain healthy


East Champaran, May 08 (HS). Dr. Ashish Rai, soil scientist of Krishi Vigyan Kendra Parsauni of East Champaran district, told Hindustan News that in the era of climate change, many harmful insects have started flourishing in the soil, which Affecting the production by making the crop diseased.

Scientist Dr. Rai told that for its prevention, the farmer brothers use chemical pesticides, which do not eliminate these diseases permanently, but instead harm the beneficial micro-organisms living in the soil.

Dr. Rai told that it also damages the fertility of the soil. On the other hand, food is also becoming poisonous through chemical pesticides. In such a way, farmer brothers can get rid of harmful and pathogenic insects hidden in the soil along with weeds by sunlight during the summer season. This process is called soil solarization technology.

Dr. Ashish Rai told that the impact of soil borne diseases and pests is a big challenge for the farmers. Eggs, pupae and nematodes of harmful insects hidden in the soil are damaging the crops in the fields, which is adversely affecting crop production. In such a situation, in the summer season of May-June, soil solarization technique can get rid of insects and weeds hidden in the soil in a very cheap way.

How to Solarize Soil

The most important work in this process is deep plowing of the field, which destroys the habitat of harmful insects living under the soil. It is advisable to do soil solarization when there is strong sunlight and the temperature is 40-45 centigrade, for this the month of May-June is most appropriate. For soil solarization, make small beds 4-6 weeks before sowing in high altitude fields and cover them with transparent plastic by ploughing, then press the edges of the plastic properly with the soil. So that outside air cannot enter inside. Then leave it for 3-4 weeks. In this way one can get rid of soil borne insect diseases and weeds without the use of any chemicals. Farmer brothers can use it for paddy nursery, fruit and vegetable nursery.

Do not keep crop residues in the field before using this method. Before covering with polythene, make the soil flat and friable by overturning it. Simultaneously, create moisture in the field by irrigation and cover the polythene edges with soil after drying them well to prevent heat with moisture.
