Former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott came out in support of the Adani Group on Thursday. He said he has a lot of respect for the troubled group’s chairman Gautam Adani and his company.

Abbott is known to be a supporter of Adani Group’s coal mining projects in his country. He condemned a court ruling against the Adani Group’s Carmichael coal mine project as Prime Minister of Australia in 2015. With regard to the allegations against the regulatory group concerned, he said, ‘will do its job’.

American short seller Hindenburg Research has accused the group of rigging share prices and accounting fraud. Adani Group has denied these allegations, however, despite this, shares of its listed companies fell sharply.

“I have great respect for Adani and his group,” Abbott told reporters here. He said coal produced from Adani’s Carmichael mines ‘will definitely give a boost to electrification in India’. He said, ‘I am in favor of Adani mine. I thank Adani and his team for doing so much to bring electricity to Indians and jobs and prosperity to Australia.
