According to police source, Jannat Ara Jharna has lodged the case stating she was held captive inside a house by Mamunul and been raped several times with the false promise of marrying her. Jharna also has accused Mamunul of physically assaulting her.

Talking to the reporters, Jharna said, Mamunul took advantage of her helplessness when she got divorced from her husband. The Hefazat—e-Islam leader has been continuing such notoriety on her since 2018. Jharna demanded exemplary punishment of the Islamist leader.

Meanwhile, Jharna’s medical tests were conducted at Narayanganj General Hospital.

Superintendent of Police of Narayanganj, Mohammed Zayedul Alam told reporters Mamunul Haque will be shown arrested in this case and police will press remand prayers with the court for interrogating Mamunul.

Regarding Mamunul’s notoriety, Jannat Ara Jharna said, she came to know Mamunul since 2005, when the Hefazat leader was visiting her husband Shahidul Islam being a friend. Later Mamunul started giving indecent proposals to Jharna, which resulted in quarrel with her husband Shahidul, that finally caused divorce.

In the case, Jannat Ara Jharna said, following her divorce, she turned socially and economically isolated, while distances were created with her family members. At this stage, Mamunul Haque suggested her to leave Khulna for Dhaka. Accordingly, she came to Dhaka. Mamunul used to keep her at the residences of his disciples and started alluring her with false promises of marriage. Being totally helpless, at one stage Jharna accepted Mamunul’s proposal of marrying him. Then he rented a house at North Dhanmondi’s Circular Road in Dhaka. Subsequently Jharna also took a job at a beauty parlor. Mamunul has been bearing Jharna’s expenses of living in Dhaka.

Jharna also said, on April 3, Mamunul Haque took her to Royal Resort in Narayanganj district under the pretense of sight-seeing. Later, sensing illicit sexual rendezvous of the Hefazat leader, locals arrived at the resort. At this stage, Hefazat-e-Islam men rushed to the spot and forcefully snatched Mamunul and Jharna from the people. While returning from the resort, Mamunul placed Jharna at the house of one of his disciples and strictly instructed her to refrain from contacting anyone. But later, Jharna managed to establish contact with her eldest son through mobile phone and described her helplessness and requested to rescue her from the captivity. On the basis of a general diary filed by Jharna’s father, Detective Branch of Bangladesh Police rescued Jharna from the captivity and handed her to her father.

It may be mentioned here that, on being caught red-handed by the locals at the resort in Narayanganj, Mamunul Haque had falsely claimed Janaat Ara Jharna to be his “second wife”. His sisters also made similar false statements.
