Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Benazir Ahmed has asked senior officials of the law enforcement agencies to take strict measures against those involved in recent violence such as series of arson attacks on public and private establishments, including office of deputy commissioner and upazila nirbahi officer, police station and check-posts and those involved into the incident of forcefully snatching away an accused from police custody. Such incidents are seen by the IGP and other senior officials of Bangladesh Police as extremely concerning.

In the meeting, senior officials at police headquarters, metropolitan police commissioners, deputy inspector generals, deputy commissioners of metropolitan police, superintendents of police and officers in-charge of police station participated.

The IGP said police could use more powerful weapons if firing of rubber bullets seemed ineffective in brining situation under control. Besides, he urged police personnel to keep their morale strong.

Some police officers, who attended the meeting, told reporters that the IGP gave directions to check violence very strictly. In reply, the colleagues assured him of stringent actions.

During 26-28 March countrywide anarchism and terrorist acts of pro-Caliphate Hefazat-e-Islam as well as Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jamaat-e-Islami, Hizbut Tahrir, Neo JMB and other militancy outfits, several people died while the unruly mobs set fire on public and private properties.

It was earlier reported in Blitz, while the unruly Islamists and their cohorts were continuing mayhem under the pretense of “protest against visit of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi”, several supporters of these anti-state elements were busy in publishing instigative posts and videos on social media, including YouTube and Facebook. Until filing of this report, none of those cyber terrorists have been arrested. It may be mentioned here that, IGP Dr Benazir Ahmed has instructed the senior officials of police to arrest those responsible for the recent terrorist acts of Hefazat-e-Islam and its cohorts.

Dr Benazir Ahemed asked the members of law enforcement agencies to remain alert about future terrorist acts of Hefazat and its cohorts, particularly in Chattogram, Khulna, Rangpur and some other districts.

He said Hefazat activists snatched their leader Mamunul Haque from police custody and waged violence in Sonargaon area of Narayanganj because of lax security measures.

The IGP put emphasis on probing the security measures during the recent violence–whether there were faults or shortcomings and the reasons behind successful or failed operations. He said action would be taken following the probes.

Police’s role in containing Covid-19 infections was also discussed in the meeting.
