New York – Very sad news has come out from America. Members of an Indian family were among eight people who drowned while trying to illegally cross a river from Canada to the US, the news agency quoted officials as saying. The bodies were discovered in a swamp near the St. Lawrence River in Quebec, according to Lee-Ann O’Brien, deputy chief of local police.

Six bodies were found during an air search on Thursday, while two more bodies were recovered on Friday. The Akwesne Mohawk Police Service (AMPS) said one body was that of a woman believed to be an Indian national, while the other was an infant of Romanian descent with a Canadian passport. The identity of the dead has not been revealed yet.

O’Brien told a videocast news conference that AMPS is working with immigration and Homeland Security officials to confirm the identities of the victims and notify their families. Another family involved in the incident is believed to be from Romania. A boat discovered near the bodies belonged to Casey Oakes, a Canadian native who is currently missing.

Canada has recently become a transit point for Indians attempting to enter the US illegally. Under a recent agreement between US President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the two countries have pledged to stop illegal immigration and return individuals caught trying to cross the border. As a result of this agreement, Indians trying to enter the US from Canada will be deported back to Canada.
