Russia succeeded in frustrating the West’s plans to isolate the Russian Federation, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at a meeting with the heads of the territorial departments of the Foreign Ministry on February 27.
“We managed not only to thwart the plans of the collective West to isolate, and even dismember Russia, and to ensure ongoing cooperation with the overwhelming majority of members of the international community,” the minister said.
He stressed that Moscow is developing closer and more effective ties with the world’s majority. In addition, according to him, over the past couple of years, the number of countries that want to join the BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization has increased dramatically, now there are about two dozen of them. We are talking about states that play a prominent role in their regions, Lavrov concluded.
Last November, Mikhail Ulyanov, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to International Organizations in Vienna, stated the absence of Russia’s isolation on the world stage.
In September of the same year, Russian President Vladimir Putin, at a plenary meeting of the Eastern Economic Forum, announced the impossibility of isolating the Russian Federation. According to him, the country will continue to increase its transport potential, build road and port infrastructure.
Earlier in August, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu also said attempts to isolate the country had failed. He stressed that Russia remains a country with advanced science, developed industry and a military-industrial complex. And, although, according to him, many hoped that the special operation to protect the Donbass would somehow affect the number of companies and delegations participating in the Army-2022 forum, Russia’s friends did not change their position.
On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special operation to protect Donbass. The decision was made against the background of the aggravation of the situation in the region as a result of shelling by the Ukrainian military.
