The counting of votes for the 59 assembly seats in Meghalaya began on Thursday morning. In the initial trends, the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) is leading in three seats, while the opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) is leading in two seats.

The Election Commission gave this information on Thursday morning. The commission said the Garo National Council (GNC) and the United Democratic Party (UDP) were also leading in one seat each.

The counting of votes began at 8 am in Meghalaya amid tight security. The counting of votes is taking place at 13 centres. Meghalaya has 60 assembly seats, but due to the death of a candidate in the Sohyeong seat, the election to this seat was postponed.

Post-poll surveys predict a hung assembly in Meghalaya. Chief Minister Konrad K Sangma met Assam Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma on Tuesday night, fueling speculation of a post-poll tie-up.

Sangma’s NPP and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ran the previous government together under the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA), but contested the election on their own.
