Punishment for two police officers from Cahul: 5 years in prison and a fine of 300 thousand lei each for acts of corruption

The criminal case was started in January 2021, regarding two employees of the Cahul Police Inspectorate, who, acting jointly, allegedly demanded and received from a citizen an amount in pounds, in order not to draw up a report with regarding the contravention, namely for the violation of the rules of registration or state registration, technical inspection of vehicles.

In the same way, the two would have acted in concert, and through gestures, signs and certain words they would have claimed and later received 1000 lei from another citizen in order not to draw up a report regarding the contravention of operation of vehicles with the steering wheel located on the right side of the longitudinal axis at night and in conditions of reduced visibility.

According to the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, the criminal investigation per case lasted 3 months, and the trial of the case lasted 2 years. Finally, the court found the defendants guilty of committing the offense provided for in the Criminal Code: 2 episodes – passive corruption.

The sentence stipulates for each defendant a prison sentence of 5 years and 1 month, with a fine of 305,000 lei, with deprivation of the right to hold public office for a period of 8 years. Also, the confiscation of 1000 lei was ordered for the benefit of the state from both defendants.

The sentence can be appealed to the Cahul Court of Appeal within 15 days.
