The volume of beef on the dinner table of Russians is declining: over the past five years, it has decreased on average from 20% to 18% by the end of 2021. During this time, per capita consumption on average decreased by 1 kg to 9 kg. This was found out by the specialists of the National Rating Agency (NRA), who analyzed the official statistics for 2017-2021. “Izvestia” got acquainted with them.

In 2022, the share of beef in the meat plate should decrease by 1.9%, according to estimates by the National Pig Producers Union. At the same time, the share of pork and poultry will increase by 5.9% and 2%, respectively. In 2021, per capita consumption of pork was 15 kg and chicken 25 kg.

“A moderately negative trend will continue in 2022 and 2023, people will reduce their purchases of beef. Against the background of the growing consumption of other types of meat, the indicator for beef may drop to 8 kg per person, ”the NRA specified.

This trend is due to the high cost of beef compared to other sources of protein: pork and chicken. Thus, according to Rosstat data for January of this year, the retail price of beef was 59% higher than the cost of pork and 2.8 times higher than poultry meat.

At the end of 2022, the price tag of beef increased by 16%, while the price of pork did not change, and for chicken meat even decreased by 2.6%. For comparison: in January 2006, beef cost 12% cheaper than pork and only one and a half times more expensive than chicken, the NRA noted.
