March 9 – BLiTZ. In Latvia, due to participation in tournaments, along with Russian athletes, the most successful tennis player in the country, Elena Ostapenko, lost state support, writes Sputnik Latvia with reference to the National Olympic Committee.

The same measures of influence were applied to her colleagues Daniela Vismana and Daria Semenistaya, as well as cyclists Tom Skuinshe and Krist Neilands.

The issue was raised in February, when the head of the Ministry of Education of Latvia, Anda Chaksha, said that the state should not provide assistance to athletes who allow themselves to participate in the same tournaments as Russians and Belarusians. Later, an agreement was concluded between the Ministry and the NOC of Latvia on the termination of funding. At the same time, the document specifically stipulated that the allocation of funds is terminated regardless of the status of the competition and the decisions of the international federations.

Recall that Russian and Belarusian tennis players can play at the tournaments of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) in a neutral status in all countries except Britain. Cyclists are allowed to compete in International Cycling Union (UCI) competitions also under a neutral flag.
