Thousands of migrants heading towards the US

As the day of inauguration of Joe Biden is approaching, thousands of migrants from South American nations as well as African-Asian countries are heading towards the US, as the next US administration will be accepting hundreds of thousands of illegal migrants from around the world. According to reports, Guatemalan military has detained hundreds of migrants at its border as Hondurans, including many families with young children, continued to walk north as part of caravan hoping to reach the United States.

Floods of caravan heading towards US

Reuters report said, the Guatemalan military detained 600 migrants at the border crossing point in Corinto and transferred them to immigration authorities. According to military spokesman Ruben Tellez, Guatemalan authorities returned 102 Honduran migrants back to Honduras, after the first groups in caravan set off from San Pedro Sula.

The Red Cross estimates that up to 4,000 people could join the caravan, as Honduras reels from violence and an economy shattered by hurricanes and coronavirus lockdowns.

“We’re suffering from hunger,” Oscar Garcia told Reuters as he made his way toward the Guatemala border. The banana plantation worker said his home was destroyed in November’s hurricanes, and that he’s fleeing north hoping to earn enough to send money back to support his mother and his young daughter.

“It’s impossible to live in Honduras, there’s no work, there’s nothing,” he added.

The first migrant caravan of the year comes less than a week before US President-elect Joe Biden takes office.

While Biden has promised a more humane approach to migration, in a departure from outgoing President Donald Trump’s anti-immigrant policies, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Mexico are coordinating their own security and public health measures aimed at curtailing irregular migration across the region.

Meanwhile, members of the pro-immigrant Joe Biden team have started privately expressing serious concerns about the risk of growing numbers of migrants seeking to enter the United States in the early days of Biden’s administration.

It may be mentioned here that, during Donald Trump’s presidency, heavyweight Democrats such as Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clinton, Kamala Harris, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, Ilhan Omar and others as well as Barack Obama, Michelle Obama and Joe Biden had expressed anger at Trump’s initiatives in stopping illegal migrants from entering the US. But now, things have changes for Joe Biden and his Democratic Party comrades. Instead of welcoming the illegal migrants, they have already started efforts in stopping them – even before taking the office.

Talking to Blitz, several experts on illegal migrant issue said, before the 2020 presidential election, hundreds and thousands of people around the world were hoping for Joe Biden’s victory so that they could enter the US through various borders. It is also learned that, from October last year, members of organized human trafficking rackets were arranging vehicles as well as making deals with the prospective migrants with the plan of entering the US immediately after January 21.

Experts said, in Central America, people are suffering from growing hunger as well as extreme economic crisis – mostly due to devastating fallout of the hurricanes, as well as violence and the lockdown measures that disrupted the job market.

It is anticipated that the flood of migrants will start moving towards the US from the night of January 18, which will continue at least for several weeks. Such wave of migrants may pose serious threat to national security of the US, as there is risk of radical Islamic militants – including members of Islamic State (ISIS) melting into the caravan crowd.
